【브레이크뉴스 대구】이성현 기자=내년 6월 3일 실시되는 2026년도 전국 동시지방선거에 출마할 출마 예정자들의 움직임이 조금씩 포착되고 있는 가운데 일각에서 ‘사전 공천설 및 공천 내정설’ 등이 난무하는 등 지역 정치권에 혼란이 가중되고 있다.  

보수색채가 짙은 대구와 경북의 2026년도 지방선거 동향은 보수성향인 국민의힘에 그리 녹록치 않을 것이란 예측이다. 계엄과 탄핵과정, 그리고 대선을 거치며 정권을 넘겨준 국민의힘은 최근 전당대회를 준비하면서까지도 국민의 기대에 미치지 못한 체 허우적거리는 일관된 모습을 보여주고 있다. 내년 있을 지방선거가 힘들 수밖에 없는 이유다.

이런 가운데 정치권은 몇몇 지자체에서 민주당 후보가 당선될 것이란 예견도 심심찮게 나오고 있다. 

당 운명도 모를 판에 “공천 내정설”부터 혼란스러운 국민의힘 

국민의힘과 달리 민주당 등 다른 진보정당들은 지방선거 준비에 들어가는 모양새다. 그러나 국민의힘의 경우, 전당대회 일정도 남아 있는 상황에서 당의 운명조차 가늠하기 힘든 상황이 이어지면서 지방선거 준비체제는 시간을 더 필요로 할 것이란 분석이다. 실제, 위원장이 교체된  국민의힘 대구경북시도당의 경우 아직 당직 인선도 마무리 짓지 못한 상황이다. 

정황적 상황은 이런데도 정치권 주변에서는 공천 이야기가 구체적으로 나오기 시작했다. 특히, 예선 경쟁이 치열한 국민의힘 쪽에서는 ‘사전 공천설’까지 인위적으로 퍼뜨리는 듯한 상황도 관찰된다. 출마 예정자가 자신의 인지도와 지명도를 높이기 위한 일종의 자작극으로 보인다. 

사전 공천설이 돌기 시작하면 가장 입장이 곤란해지는 쪽은 역시 공천권을 가지고 있다고 봐야 하는 각 당협위원장(현역 국회의원)들이다. 당 상황이 녹록치 않은 상황에서 특정 인물에 대한 공천 이야기까지 돌게 될 경우, 정치적으로 난감해지는 상황을 원치 않는 국회의원들은 이 때문에 공천에 대하여는 입을 굳게 닫고 있다. 그럼에도 대구와 경북지역 정치권에서는 끊임없이 회자되고 있다. 

얼마 전 군위에서 당직자 회의를 가진 강대식 국회의원(대구 동구 군위을) 은 “공천의 'ㄱ'자도 꺼내지 않고 있는데 왜 벌써 두드러기 날 말하느냐”며 격앙스러운 반응을 나타낸 것으로 알려졌다. 

그러면서 그는 “누가 봐도 ‘그 사람이 공천을 받겠구나‘ 예측할 수 있도록 지역민을 위해 봉사를 열심히 하던지, 일을 참 잘한다는 소리를 들어야 할 것”이라며 “공천을 해야 한다면 이런 사람에게 공천을 주겠다”고 의견을 밝힌 바 있다고 한다. 1년 남은 시간을 쓸데없는 에너지 낭비 대신 누구나가 인정할 수 있도록 활용하라는 뜻으로 풀이된다.

강 의원이 이같이 격앙된 모습을 보인 데는 군위 지역 출마 예정자들 사이에 왜곡된 정보 등이 마구 흘러 다니고 있다는 데 따른 것으로, 실제 모 인사는 차기 군위군수 선거에 있어 자신의 공천이 확실하다는 등의 이야기를 하고 다닌다는 소문이 퍼져 있다. 다만, 이같은 현상이 군위뿐만이 아니라 대구경북 대다수 지역에서 일어나고 있는 현상이라는 것.

이와 관련해 정치권 관계자는 "보수 성향 짙은 TK의 지방선거는 에선 통과가 주목적인 국민의힘 관계자들 사이에서는 그만큼 선거가 빨리 시작된다"며 "강 의원과 같이 당협위원장이 지금쯤 내년 지선 공천 인물에 대한 기준을 빨리 정해 줄 필요도 있다"고 말했다. 

출마 예정자들의 이 같은 공천 내정설도 문제지만, 대구 수성구와 동구, 달서구, 북구 등 한 지자체에 다수의 당협이 존재하는 일부 지역에서는 당협위원장 간 지자체장 공천 주도권에 대한 소문도 퍼지고 있다. 다선의 당협위원장이 당연히 공천 주도권을 쥘 것이라는 설에서부터 초선이라 하더라도 양보는 못한다고 하는 등 당협위원장 간 수면밑 싸움도 정치권을 중심으로 퍼지고 있다. 

실제, 최근 대구 지역 한 초선의원은 다선 의원에 공천 주도권을 양보할 생각이 없음을 피력했다고 한다. 이제까지 자신의 지역구가 아닌 곳에서 지차제장이 계속 배출된 만큼 이번만큼은 자신의 지역구에서 구청장이 나와야 하기에 공천 주도권을 쥐어야겠다는 논리다. 

광역단체장을 꿈꾸는 현역 국회의원에 대한 행보도 지적당하고 있다. 특히, 이철우 경북도지사가 투병으로 내년 지방선거에 출마할 가능성이 낮을 것이란 전망들이 나오자마자, 현역 국회의원 일부가 도지사 출마에 무게를 두고 있다는 설들이 쏟아져 나왔다. 이 가운데 절반은 사실무근이었지만 절반은 실제 고민하는 것으로 파악됐다. 특히, 국민의힘 모 국회의원은 현 도지사와의 친분 등의 특수한 관계임을 포장해 ‘도지사가 출마하지 못할 경우 자신에게 넘길 것“이라는 뉘앙스의 메시지를 자신의 지역구 주민들에게 풀고 다녔다는 의심을 받고 있다.  이철우 도지사는 이 소식을 듣고 상당히 노했다는 뒷얘기가 나오고 있다.

박남수 정치평론가는 “출마를 준비 중인 예정자들의 입장에서는 어떡하든 자신의 인지도를 높이고 지명도를 높여야 하는 전략을 사용할 수밖에 없다”면서도 “그러나 그동안 지역민들의 절대적인 애정을 받아온 국민의힘을 바라보는 지역민들의 감정을 조금이라도 배려한다면, 우선적으로 당의 안정된 모습을 통해 자신들의 경쟁력을 보여주는 양심이 전제되어야 한다. 과거처럼 공천만 받으면 된다는 식으로 내년 지방선거를 준비한다면 개인은 물론 당 전체가 지역민들의 큰 반발에 부딪힐 수밖에 없을 것”이라고 전망했다.

This appears to be a self-directed effort by a potential candidate to boost their profile and name recognition.

When rumors of a pre-nomination begin to circulate, the parties most vulnerable are the respective party chapter chairs (incumbent National Assembly members), who are considered to hold the power to nominate candidates. Given the party's precarious situation, if talk of a specific candidate's nomination were to circulate, lawmakers, unwilling to risk political embarrassment, remain tight-lipped about the nomination. Nevertheless, it continues to be a constant topic of conversation in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk political circles.

Representative Kang Dae-sik (Daegu Dong-gu Gunwi-eul) reportedly reacted angrily during a recent party officials meeting in Gunwi, saying, "We haven't even mentioned the nomination, so why are you already talking about me?"

He then stated, "He should either diligently serve the local community so that everyone can predict, 'That person will get the nomination,' or be recognized for his excellent work." He added, "If I have to nominate someone, I'll give it to that person." This seems to imply that instead of wasting energy on the remaining year, he should utilize it to gain universal recognition.

Representative Kang's agitated reaction stems from the circulating false information among potential candidates in the Gunwi region. Rumors are circulating that a certain individual is claiming that he is certain to be nominated for the next Gunwi County Mayoral Election. However, this phenomenon is not limited to Gunwi, but is occurring across most of Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province.

In addition to the potential nominations of potential candidates, rumors are also circulating in some areas where multiple party associations exist within a single local government, such as Suseong-gu, Dong-gu, Dalseo-gu, and Buk-gu in Daegu, about party association chairmen taking the lead in nominating local leaders.
