이에 당사자 중 한 사람인 서호영 예비후보는 "난 절대 이재만 예비후보를  지지하지 않는다"고 강력 부인했다. 서 예비후보는 강석중 총괄본부장이 자신의 의중을 받아 지지를 선언한 것처럼 전송한 보도자료 내용은 "사실과 전혀 다르다"면서 “해당 내용을 듣고 나의 이름을 모두 빼라고 했다” 고 강조했다. 

그러면서 "이번 선거에서 내가 누구를 지지하는 일은 없을 것이다. 어울리지 않는 행동이라고 생각하고 있다. 내가 지지한다고 밝혔다는 내용은 완전히 잘못된 내용이다. 해당 자료에서 나의 이름은 모두 빼달라. 강석중 총괄본부장 앞에 붙여진 내 이름도 빼달라”고 강력하고 단호한 어조로 거듭 강조했다.

이어 그는 “내가 누구를 지지하겠다고 하는 것도 우스운 일이지만, 특히 이재만 후보를 지지하는 일은 더더욱 없을 것이다. 이재만 후보가 낸 보도자료는 나의 생각과는 전혀 다른  허위다”라고 재차 강조했다. 서 예비후보는 지난 지방선거 당시 이재만 당시 후보를 지원하다 대구광역시의원직을 잃는 등 그로인해 심각한 정치적 타격을 입었다.

정가 한 관계자는 “안 그랬으면 좋았을 일이 결국은 발생했다”고 혀를 끌끌 찼다. 그는 “자신들의 선거, 자신들의 정치 인생을 두고 뭐라 판단하고 싶지는 않다. 그렇지만, 지역민들로부터 환영받을 만한 행보는 절대 아니다. 그동안 선거에서 보여준 두 사람의 정치 행보를 지역 주민들이 그리 좋아하지 않는다. 그런 관점에서 두 사람이 뭉치는 것은 플러스보다는 오히려 그들의 정치 인생에 마이너스 요인이 될 것”이라고 전망했다.
