국토부 차관을 지낸 손명수 의원(경기 용인시을)은 명칭을 문제 삼았다. 손 의원은 “역 명과 역 광장이 다른 경우가 있나”며 “철도사업법 제4조에 따라 철도노선 및 역 명칭에 대한 관리 지침이 있고 국토부의 역명심의위원회를 거쳐야 한다”고 지적했다.

이에 박상우 국토교통부 장관은 “지적에 동의한다”며 “자체적으로 별칭을 정해 부르는 것도 가능하다고 되어 있어서 법률적으로 가능한 것 같은 오해의 소지가 있다”고 답했다.

그러면서 “동대구역 광장은 아직 준공 전이기 때문에 시설물에 대한 관리권자가 대구시장이다”며 “정상 준공 이후에 대구시의 행위에 대해 따져보겠다”고 말했다.

대구시는 “동대구역 광장에 대한 관리권한은 대구시에 있고 철도 시설에 영향을 미치지 않는 시설물을 설치할 경우 철도공단과 협의할 의무가 없다”며 문제가 되지 않는다는 입장을 밝혔다.
