대구시당은 12일 “시민의 뜻보다 3m짜리 동상이 더 두려웠던 그들의 선택은 민주주의를 모욕한 처사”라며 “ 숙의와 토론은 없었다”고 짧지만 강력한 경고 메시지를 보냈다. 

그들은 “대구 9개 구·군의회 국민의힘 의원들은 중앙당의 ‘국회로 집합’ 한마디에 징집병처럼 줄줄이 서울로 몰려 갔다. 대구 동구의회는 예결특위가 파행될 뻔했고, 북구의회는 의장단 전원이 현장 방문을 취소하려 했다”면서 “시민을 위해 일해야 할 지방의회가 중앙당의 지시에 무너졌다”고 거듭 비판했다.

그러면서 “국민의힘은 대구 시민을 버린 정당”이라 규정하고 “독재 미화의 동상 앞에 떨고, 중앙 수뇌부의 손가락짓에 지방자치를 포기한 그들의 모습은 정당으로서의 기능과 의지를 스스로 폐기한 자해적 정치 집단에 다름없다”고 경고했다. 

대구시당은 “시민의 대리인이 아닌 당의 출장소 직원으로 전락한 (국민의힘의 대구시민 모욕의 피해는) 고스란히 대구 시민이 감당해야 한다”고 규탄했다.

한편, 대구시의회는 12일 오전 제319회 임시회 제3차 본회의를 열고 ‘대구시 박정희 대통령 기념사업에 관한 조례 폐지조례안’을 심사했다. 심사 결과 재석 의원 33명 중 32명이 반대했으며 1명만이 찬성했다. 찬성 1표가 육정미 시의원임을 전제하면 이날 이만규 의장 등 국민의힘 소속 의원 전원이 대구시민이 제출한 폐지안을 묵살한 것으로 계산된다. 

박 전 대통령이 산업화와 근대화를 이끌며 대한민국 경제 발전과 산업 기반 독립에 중대한 기여를 했다는 주장과 함께 “(동대구역)동상은 우상화가 아니라 대한민국 산업화 정신을 계승하는 역사적 상징물”이라는 의견은 있었지만, 상징물이 반드시 동상이어야 하느냐, 동상의 위치가 굳이 논란이 될 동대구역 광장이어야 하느냐 등의 시민들의 입장에 대하여는 국민의힘 소속 단 한 사람의 시의원도 시민의 입장을 곱씹은 인사는 없었다.

소식이 전해지자, 국민의힘 소속 당원들 사이에서조차 “낮 뜨겁다”는 반응이 나왔다. 시민들이 제시한 폐지안은 휴지 조각이 됐지만, 철도공단과 대구시간의 광장 소유권을 둘러싼 동상 철거 소송 결과에 따라 박정희 동상의 존치 여부는 12일 대구시의회 결정과 전혀 다른 결말이 날 수도 있다.

They further defined the People Power Party as a party that has abandoned the citizens of Daegu, warning, "Their trembling before statues glorifying dictatorship and their abandonment of local autonomy at the urging of the central leadership are nothing less than a self-destructive political group that has abandoned its function and will as a political party."

The Daegu City Party condemned the party, stating, "The citizens of Daegu must bear the full brunt of the People Power Party's insults to Daegu citizens, who have been reduced to mere party branch employees rather than representatives of the citizens."

Meanwhile, the Daegu City Council held the third plenary session of the 319th extraordinary session on the morning of the 12th and reviewed the "Ordinance to Repeal the Ordinance on the Memorial Project for President Park Chung-hee in Daegu." The review resulted in 32 of the 33 council members present voting against the motion, with only one voting in favor. Assuming that Councilmember Yuk Jeong-mi voted in favor, this means that all People Power Party members, including Speaker Lee Man-gyu, ignored the motion submitted by Daegu citizens.

There were arguments that former President Park had significantly contributed to the economic development and industrial independence of South Korea by leading industrialization and modernization, and that the statue (at Dongdaegu Station) was not an idolization but a historical symbol that carries on the spirit of South Korea's industrialization. However, not a single councilmember from the People Power Party considered the citizens' concerns regarding whether the symbol necessarily had to be a statue or whether the statue should be located in the controversial Dongdaegu Station Plaza.

As the news spread, even members of the People Power Party reacted with, "It's hot out today." While the citizens' proposal to remove the statue has been scrapped, the outcome of the lawsuit between the Railroad Corporation and Daegu City Hall over the ownership of the plaza, which calls for its removal, could have a completely different outcome than the Daegu City Council's decision on the 12th.
