【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=포항시는 27일 경상북도 동부청사에서 경상북도, 안동시, 의성군과 함께 프라운호퍼 생체의공학 연구소(IBMT)와 ‘첨단재생의료산업 육성을 위한 공동 협력 양해각서(MOU)’를 체결했다.

이번 협약은 ▲하이브리드 마이크로시스템 기술 개발 협력 ▲재생의학 분야 국제 공동 연구 프로젝트 추진 ▲글로벌 전문 인재 양성 등을 주요 내용으로 한다.

하이브리드 마이크로시스템 기술은 생체 조직과 미세 센서를 통합한 차세대 융합 플랫폼으로, 향후 포항 지역의 국가 연구 인프라와 연계할 경우 연구개발(R&D) 시너지 창출이 기대된다.

협약 체결 이후 IBMT 관계자들은 포항의 첨단 바이오 연구시설을 방문했다. 이들은 포항가속기연구소와 세포막단백질연구소를 찾아 연구시설을 둘러보고, 포스텍 및 한동대학교 연구진과 향후 공동 연구 및 기술 협력 방안을 논의했다.

장상길 포항시장 권한대행은 “이번 협약이 포항 바이오·의공학 산업의 글로벌 진출 기반이 될 것”이라며 “지역의 우수한 연구 인프라를 토대로 첨단재생의료 산업 경쟁력을 강화하고, 바이오·의공학 산업의 중심 도시로 도약하겠다”고 밝혔다.

한편, 1987년 설립된 프라운호퍼 생체의공학 연구소(IBMT)는 생체의료공학과 테라노스틱스(진단·치료 통합) 기술 분야에서 경쟁력을 갖춘 독일 연구기관으로, 약 160명의 연구 인력을 보유하고 있다.

On the 27th, Pohang City, along with Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, Andong City, and Uiseong County, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering (IBMT) at the Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Government Building. Following the MOU signing, IBMT officials toured Pohang's advanced bioresearch facilities. They toured the research facilities at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory and the Cell Membrane Protein Research Institute and discussed future joint research and technological collaboration with researchers from POSTECH and Handong Global University.

Acting Mayor of Pohang, Jang Sang-gil, stated, "This agreement will serve as the foundation for Pohang's biomedical engineering industry to advance globally. Building on the region's excellent research infrastructure, we will strengthen the competitiveness of the advanced regenerative medicine industry and leap forward as a hub for the biomedical engineering industry."

Meanwhile, the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering (IBMT), established in 1987, is a German research institute with a competitive edge in biomedical engineering and theranostics (integrated diagnostics and treatment) technology, employing approximately 160 researchers.
