14일 서울 신라호텔에서 열린 이번 시상식은 동아닷컴, iMBC, 한경닷컴이 공동 주최한 행사로, 소비자 조사를 기반으로 분야별 브랜드 경쟁력을 평가하는 국내 대표 시상식이다.

포항시는 전국 8개 후보 지자체 가운데 최초 상기도, 인지도, 마케팅, 브랜드 선호도 등 전 항목에서 최고점을 기록했다. 특히 ‘가장 먼저 떠오르는 도시’를 의미하는 최초상기도에서 경쟁 도시와 큰 격차를 보이며 ‘배터리 하면 포항’이라는 인식을 확고히 했다는 평가다.

포항시는 2017년 에코프로 투자 유치를 시작으로, 2019년 차세대 배터리 리사이클링 규제자유특구 지정, 2021년 전기차 배터리 자원순환 클러스터 조성, 2023년 국가첨단전략산업 특화단지 선정, 2024년 기회발전특구 지정 등 굵직한 국책사업을 연이어 확보하며 산업 기반을 구축해 왔다.

특히 특화단지 지정 이후에는 산단 입주 절차 패스트트랙 도입과 전력·용수 인프라 확충, 방류수 지하관로 구축 등 핵심 기반시설을 강화해 기업들이 적기에 생산에 돌입할 수 있도록 지원했다.

인재 양성 기반도 확대되고 있다. 배터리 아카데미와 포스텍 배터리 특성화대학원, 글로컬대학 사업 등을 통해 고급 연구인력부터 현장 실무인력까지 아우르는 공급 체계를 구축 중이다.

이 같은 지원을 바탕으로 포스코퓨처엠 등 배터리 소재 선도기업이 집적되며 영일만·블루밸리 산업단지 분양률은 90%를 넘어섰다. 포항은 양극재와 음극재를 동시에 생산하는 글로벌 소재 생산 거점으로 빠르게 성장하고 있다.

포항시는 전기차 중심 산업을 넘어 전기추진선박 등 해양 분야로 확장을 추진하며 산업 포트폴리오 다변화에도 속도를 내고 있다. 현재 ‘K-차세대 전기추진선박 글로벌 혁신특구’ 조성을 추진 중이다.

이상엽 일자리경제국장은 “5년 연속 대상 수상은 포항이 대한민국 배터리 산업을 이끄는 대표 도시임을 재확인한 결과”라며 “글로벌 배터리 허브로 도약할 수 있도록 경쟁력 강화에 지속적으로 힘쓰겠다”고 밝혔다.

Pohang City has once again proven its status as a global hub for the battery industry by winning the Grand Prize in the ‘Battery Industry City’ category at the ‘2026 Korea Representative Brand Awards’ for the fifth consecutive year.

The awards ceremony, held on the 14th at the Shilla Hotel in Seoul, was co-hosted by DongA.com, iMBC, and Hankyung.com and is Korea’s leading awards ceremony that evaluates brand competitiveness by sector based on consumer surveys.

Among the eight candidate municipalities nationwide, Pohang City recorded the highest scores in all categories, including initial awareness, recognition, marketing, and brand preference. In particular, it was evaluated that the city has firmly established the perception that “Pohang means batteries” by showing a significant gap with competing cities in initial awareness, which signifies being the “city that comes to mind first.”

Pohang City Pohang City has been building its industrial foundation by successively securing major national projects, starting with attracting investment from EcoPro in 2017, followed by the designation of the Next-Generation Battery Recycling Regulatory Free Zone in 2019, the establishment of the Electric Vehicle Battery Resource Recycling Cluster in 2021, the selection as a National Advanced Strategic Industry Specialized Complex in 2023, and the designation as an Opportunity Development Special Zone in 2024.

In particular, following the designation of the specialized complex, the city supported companies in commencing production in a timely manner by strengthening core infrastructure, such as introducing a fast-track entry procedure, expanding power and water infrastructure, and constructing underground wastewater pipelines.

The foundation for talent cultivation is also expanding. Through initiatives such as the Battery Academy, the POSTECH Graduate School of Battery Specialization, and the Glocal University project, the city is establishing a supply system that encompasses everything from high-level research personnel to field-based working staff.

Based on this support, leading battery material companies such as POSCO FutureM have clustered in the area, and the occupancy rate of the Yeongilman and Blue Valley Industrial Complexes has exceeded 90%. Pohang is rapidly growing into a global materials production hub that simultaneously manufactures both cathode and anode materials.

Pohang City is accelerating the diversification of its industrial portfolio by expanding beyond its electric vehicle-centric industry into the marine sector, including electric propulsion vessels. Currently, the city is pursuing the establishment of the "K-Next Generation Electric Propulsion Vessel Global Innovation Special Zone."

Lee Sang-yeop, Director General of the Jobs and Economy Bureau, stated, "Winning the Grand Prize for five consecutive years reaffirms that Pohang is the leading city driving Korea's battery industry," adding, "We will continue to strive to strengthen our competitiveness so that we can leap forward as a global battery hub."
