육 의원은 24일 자신의 입장을 담은 장문의 성명을 통해 민주당 대구시당의 탈당 권유를 정면으로 비판했다. 

그는 "정당의 외피만 걸친 권력놀음에 시민은 안중에도 없었다"며 "정당의 명령보다 대구시민에 대한 책임이 우선"이라고 반박했다. 그러면서 "비례대표 의원으로서 내 정치적 신념과 지역 의정활동을 외면한 채, 명분 없는 탈당 요구에 응할 수 없다"고 밝혔다.

육 의원은 2022년 대선 직전 민주당 후보에 대한 비판과 타 정당 후보 지지를 SNS에 게시한 바 있다. 이에 대해 민주당은 "정당과 유권자에 대한 배신 행위"라며 2023년 7월, 육 의원에게 당원자격정지 2년의 징계를 내렸고, 최근엔 스스로 탈당할 것을 촉구했다.

민주당 대구시당은 지난 18일 공식 논평을 통해 "비례대표는 정당의 정체성과 책임 정치 위에 존재하는 제도"라며, "소속 정당의 노선을 부정하고 타 후보를 지지한 시점에서 자격을 상실했다"고 주장했다. 아울러 육 의원의 태도를 '정치적 기만'이자 '공적 책무에 반하는 중대한 위반'으로 규정했다.

이에 육 의원은 "비례대표라고 해서 정당의 권력자에 복무하는 것이 책임 있는 행동은 아니다"라며, "나는 대구시민의 대표로, 그 책임에 따라 의정활동을 해왔다"고 맞섰다. 그는 “의회 내 단 한 석의 민주당 의원으로서 고립 속에서도 시정 견제를 위해 최선을 다했다”고 강조했다.

이번 논란은 단순한 당내 갈등을 넘어, 비례대표제가 안고 있는 구조적 문제와 정당정치의 한계까지 함께 드러냈다는 평가다.
