거침없는 언어로 막말의 대명사로 불려왔던 홍준표 예비후보는 이날도 거친 단어들을 쏟아냈다. 이에 대해 김재원 예비후보 역시 지지 않겠다는 듯 홍 후보를 몰아부쳤다. 

정책 토론 과정에서 김재원 예비후보가 “대구 정치권은 가덕도 신공항에 반대했는데 홍 후보는 당시 대찬성을 하고 나섰다. 대선 표 때문에 대구 민심을 배신했다는 비난이 있다”고 꼬집자 홍 예비후보는 “참 어리석은 질문”이라고 불편함을 그대로 드러냈다. 이어 “가덕도 신공항 반대한다고 해서 그게 안 되느냐”고 반박했다.

그러자 홍준표 후보는 "참 말씀 못되게 하신다“고 쏘아붙이면서 ”대구시장으로 나왔으면 자기가 할 수 있다고 시민들한테 설득력 있게 이야기해야지, 당선자 팔고 당선자 사진 붙이는 게 무슨 선거냐, 자신이 없으면 물러나는 게 맞다"고 응수했다.

그러면서 “(나는)대선 후보 경선 때부터 통합신공항을 국비로 추진하겠다고 줄곧 말해왔다. 그리고, 관련 법안도 발의했다"고 강조하고 ”윤석열 대통령 당선인과 더불어민주당 이재명 대선 후보도 약속했었다. 공항은 그렇게 나라가 책임지고 건설하면 되고 대구시는 후적지 개발을 주도적으로 하면 된다“고 받아쳤다.

이후 홍 예비후보가 김 예비후보에게 “더이상 질문 안 하겠다”고 하자 김재원 예비후보는 “고맙다”고 응수했다. 그러자 홍 예비후보는 “고마운 게 아니고 시민들이 전부 보고 있는데 답변 그런 식으로 하면 안 된다”고 쏘아붙였다.
