16일 포항시에 따르면 미국을 방문 중인 이강덕 포항시장과 백인규 포항시의회 의장을 비롯한 포항시 대표단이 지난 13일(미 현지시간)UC샌디에이고를 방문해 부설기관인 ‘디자인 앤 이노베이션 빌딩’ 의 폴 로벤(Paul Roben) 부총장과 지역 창업가 육성을 위한 방안에 대해 논의했다.

UC 샌디에이고 폴로벤 부총장은 UC 샌디에이고의 우수 프로그램을 소개하며, 관련 분야에서 학생들이 자유롭게 창업할 수 있도록 지원하고 있음을 설명했으며, 이에 이 시장은 바이오 클러스터 육성을 위해 지역 대학과 기업의 기여 방안 및 창업지원 프로그램을 적극 활용하겠다고 말했다.

이어 포항시 대표단은 6명의 노벨상 수상자를 배출하는 등 암·알츠하이머·유전병 등의 분야에서 손꼽히는 솔크연구소를 방문해 우수 프로그램, 인프라, 네트워크 등을 바탕으로 세계적인 바이오 연구 결과를 연속성 있게 만들 수 있는 비결 등 전반적 현황에 대해 파악했다.

오후에는 세계에서 가장 큰 바이오 단체인 바이오콤 캘리포니아의 미구엘 모타(Miguel Motta) 샌디에이고 지부 대표를 만나 글로벌 바이오 네트워크를 강화하는 한편 포항의 미래 비전을 토론했다.
