파리올림픽이 열리기 이전부터 대구시와 대구시의회는 국제대회를 유치할 수 있을 정도의 규격을 갖춘 대구사격장을 활성화하는 방안으로 국제사격대회를 유치해야 한다는 공감대가 만들어져 왔다. 특히, 사격장이 소재한 북구 지역 출신 대구시의회 의원들은 국제대회 유치에 대한 당위성을 대구시에 꾸준히 제기해 왔다.

홍준표 대구시장은 최근 국제대회 유치를 공식적으로 인정했다. 이에 따라 대구시는 우선 전반적인 시설 상황을 점검하는 한편, 개선이 필요한 시설의 대대적인 정비에 나선다는 방침이다. 

5일 김선조 행정부시장은 북구 금호동에 위치한 대구국제사격장을 방문했다. 이날 김 부시장은 대구국제사격장 전반적인 시설 개선사항을 점검하는 한편 국제대회 개최를 위한 시설기준과 부족한 장애인 편의시설을 확인했다.

김 부시장은 "대구국제사격장 시설개선이 원활하게 이뤄질 수 있도록 온 힘을 모아달라"면서 "국제기준에 적합한 시설과 장애인 편의시설이 보완되면 2027년 세계사격선수권대회(2년 주기), 2030년 장애인세계사격선수권대회(4년 주기) 등 각종 국제대회 유치는 물론 시민들의 사격 레포츠 인프라를 확충하고, 그동안 소외되어왔던 장애인들의 사격 스포츠 참여기회도 대폭 확대해 나갈 수 있을 것으로 기대된다"라고 강조했다. 대구시는 대구국제사격장 시설보완에 약 190억원의 사업비가 소요될 것으로 전망하고, 국비 확보와 대구시의회의 협조를 구할 예정이다. 

한편, 홍 시장은 지난 7월 29일 반효진(대구체고2) 선수가 파리 올림픽 사격 공기소총 10m 여자결선에서 금메달을 획득한 것과 관련, 250만 대구 시민과 함께 반 선수의 쾌거를 축하하고, 대구국제사격장 시설을 보완해 국제대회를 유치할 수 있도록 준비하겠다고 발표한 바 있다. 김 부시장이 사격장 점검에 나선 5일 오후 파리올림픽에 참가하고 있는 한국 한국 남자 사격팀은 25m 속사권총 결선에서 은메달을 또 획득했다.

On the afternoon of the 5th, when Deputy Mayor Kim inspected the shooting range, the Korean men's shooting team participating in the Paris Olympics won another silver medal in the 25m rapid-fire pistol final.
