【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=이강덕 포항시장이 1일(현지시간) 미국 워싱턴 D.C.에서 한국 철강산업의 중요성을 강조하며, 동맹국 간 신뢰를 기반으로 한 공정한 무역 환경 조성의 필요성을 역설했다.

이 시장은 이날 김덕만 버지니아한인회 회장을 만나 지역 기업의 북미 시장 진출과 경제·문화 협력 방안을 논의한 데 이어, 백악관 앞에서 한국 철강산업의 어려움을 알리는 캠페인을 벌였다.

지난달 28일 산업통상자원부가 포항을 ‘산업위기 선제대응지역’으로 지정했으나, 포항시는 이 조치만으로는 복합 위기를 극복하기에 부족하다고 판단, 미국 정부와 시민사회에 국제적 연대와 시장 환경 개선을 호소하고 있다.

포항은 국내 철강산업의 중심지지만, 고율 관세로 일부 공장이 가동을 멈추거나 축소 운영에 들어갔고 협력업체들도 매출 급감과 고용 불안에 시달리고 있다. 이로 인해 지역경제 기반이 흔들리며 인구 유출과 지역 소멸 우려까지 확산되고 있다.

이 시장은 “철강산업 위기는 더 이상 지역 문제가 아니라 국가 경제의 존립과 글로벌 공급망 안정이 걸린 사안”이라며 “한미 정상회담에서 철강 분야 논의조차 이뤄지지 않은 것은 심각한 문제”라고 지적했다. 이어 “한국 철강은 국가 안보와 직결된 핵심 산업인데, 동맹국에 50% 관세를 부과하는 것은 정당화될 수 없다”며 영국 사례처럼 최소 25% 수준으로 조정하거나 제한적 쿼터 예외 적용이 필요하다고 주장했다.

그는 “오늘의 호소가 한미 간 신뢰와 협력 속에 국제사회의 상생 무역환경 조성에 기여하기를 바란다”고 덧붙였다.

김덕만 버지니아한인회 회장도 “버지니아한인회의 네트워크를 활용해 한국 철강산업의 중요성을 적극 알리고, 경제·문화 교류와 인재 교류 확대에도 협력하겠다”고 말했다.

한편, 포항시는 이번 캠페인을 시작으로 코트라(KOTRA), DGA Group 등과 연계한 후속 활동을 이어가며 철강 관세 인하와 지역기업의 북미 시장 진출 기반 강화에 나설 계획이다.

He continued, "Korean steel is a core industry directly linked to national security, and imposing a 50% tariff on an ally is unjustifiable." He argued that the tariff should be reduced to at least 25%, as seen in the UK, or that limited quota exceptions should be applied.

He added, "I hope today's appeal will contribute to fostering a mutually beneficial trade environment in the international community, based on trust and cooperation between Korea and the US."

Kim Deok-man, President of the Virginia Korean Association, stated, "We will leverage the Virginia Korean Association's network to actively promote the importance of the Korean steel industry and cooperate to expand economic, cultural, and talent exchanges."

Meanwhile, Pohang City plans to launch follow-up activities in partnership with KOTRA and the DGA Group, starting with this campaign, to lower steel tariffs and strengthen the foundation for local companies to enter the North American market.
