경북도와 포항시가 공동 주최하고 포항테크노파크가 주관한 이번 엑스포는 산업통상자원부, 기후에너지환경부, 한국배터리산업협회 등이 후원했다.

이날 포스텍 대학체육관에서 열린 개막식에는 이강덕 포항시장, 양금희 경북도 경제부지사, 이상휘·이만희 국회의원, 김일만 포항시의회 의장 등 정관계 인사를 비롯해 산·학·연·관 관계자 500여 명이 참석했다.

특히 이동채 에코프로 상임고문, 김제영 LG에너지솔루션 CTO, 홍영준 포스코퓨처엠 부사장 등 국내 배터리 산업을 이끄는 주요 인사들이 개막 퍼포먼스에 참여해 엑스포의 시작을 함께 알렸다. 독일, 노르웨이, 스웨덴 등 이차전지 기술협력국 관계자들도 자리에 참석해 글로벌 배터리 산업의 지속가능한 미래를 기원했다.

개막식에 이어 진행된 기조 강연에서는 김제영 LG에너지솔루션 CTO가 연단에 올라 ‘혁신을 이끄는 LG에너지솔루션의 전략’을 주제로 발표했다. 김 CTO는 차세대 배터리 기술 혁신 방향과 글로벌 시장 대응 전략을 제시하며 큰 주목을 받았다.

메인 행사장인 포스텍 대학체육관 전시장은 ▲특별전시존 ▲소재·부품존 등 8개 전시존으로 구성됐다. 기업, 학교, 연구소 등 36개 사가 70여 개의 부스를 운영하며 기술력을 뽐냈다.

특히 포항의 앵커기업인 에코프로와 포스코퓨처엠이 특별전시존에서 대규모 홍보 부스를 운영하며 지역의 산업 경쟁력과 기술 역량을 상징적으로 선보였다.

에코프로는 약 15만 평 규모의 양극재 생산단지를 기반으로 한 독자적 기술력과 중장기 제품 개발 로드맵을 소개했다. 폐배터리 자원 회수를 포함하는 ‘클로즈드 루프(Closed-Loop) 시스템’ 중심의 친환경 순환경제 모델을 제시했다.

포스코퓨처엠은 국내에서 유일하게 양·음극재를 통합 생산하는 역량을 바탕으로, 최근 전기차 수요 둔화(캐즘) 극복을 위한 차세대 배터리 소재 기술과 안정적인 공급망 구축 성과를 강조했다. 고성능 양극재와 고효율 음극재 중심의 신기술 로드맵을 통해 기술 경쟁력을 입증했다.

이날 오후부터는 체인지업그라운드에서 독일 세션을 시작으로 노르웨이 등 전문 컨퍼런스 세션이 2일간 열려 글로벌 기술 협력과 산업 교류를 확대한다. 2일 차에는 국가배터리자원순환클러스터에서 한국 세션과 글로벌 세션이 이어진다.

이강덕 포항시장은 “이번 엑스포는 배터리 산업의 미래를 논의하고 제시하는 글로벌 산업 교류의 장이며, 포항의 미래 성장 비전을 보여주는 자리”라고 강조했다. 이 시장은 “포항이 대한민국을 넘어 세계 배터리 산업의 글로벌 허브로 도약할 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 밝혔다.

The 'International Battery Expo 2025 Pohang' grandly opened at POSTECH on the 3rd. As the first global battery industry business platform in Gyeongbuk, hosted by a local government, it is considered a crucial stage for strengthening the global leadership of the Korean battery industry.

Following the opening ceremony, Kim Je-young, CTO of LG Energy Solution, took the podium and presented on "LG Energy Solution's Strategy for Leading Innovation." Kim garnered significant attention by presenting the direction of next-generation battery technology innovation and strategies for responding to the global market.

The main venue, the POSTECH University Gymnasium, consisted of eight exhibition zones, including the Special Exhibition Zone and the Materials & Components Zone. Thirty-six companies, including corporations, schools, and research institutes, showcased their technological prowess in approximately 70 booths.

In particular, Pohang's anchor companies, EcoPro and POSCO FutureM, operated large promotional booths in the special exhibition zone, symbolically showcasing the region's industrial competitiveness and technological prowess.

EcoPro showcased its proprietary technology, based on its approximately 150,000 pyeong (approximately 490,000 square meters) cathode material production complex, and its mid- to long-term product development roadmap. It proposed an eco-friendly circular economy model centered on a "closed-loop system" that includes resource recovery from used batteries.

POSCO FutureM, leveraging Korea's only integrated cathode and anode material production capability, emphasized its achievements in building next-generation battery material technology and a stable supply chain to overcome the recent slowdown in demand for electric vehicles (the chasm). It demonstrated its technological competitiveness through a new technology roadmap centered on high-performance cathode materials and high-efficiency anode materials.

Starting in the afternoon, two days of specialized conference sessions, starting with a German session and continuing with sessions in Norway, will be held at Change Up Ground to expand global technological cooperation and industrial exchange. The second day will feature Korean and global sessions at the National Battery Resource Circulation Cluster.

Pohang Mayor Lee Kang-deok emphasized, "This expo is a global industrial exchange platform where we can discuss and present the future of the battery industry, and it also showcases Pohang's future growth vision." The mayor added, "I will do my utmost to ensure Pohang transcends South Korea and becomes a global hub for the battery industry."
