【브레이크뉴스 구미】이성현 기자=구미시(시장 김장호)는 과학기술정보통신부가 추진하는 ‘2022년 초광역권 메타버스 허브 구축‧운영 사업 공모’에 동북권 컨소시엄(경북, 구미, 강원, 강릉, 대구)으로 최종 선정됐다고 1일 밝혔다.

이번 선정으로 총 사업비 180억원 규모로 메타버스 분야를 종합 지원하는 동북권 메타버스 허브를 구축‧운영한다.

초광역권 메타버스 허브 구축 사업은 판교테크노밸리에 소재한 메타버스 허브(메타버스 신산업 분야 기업육성, 콘텐츠 제작 및 실증 지원, 인재양성 등 메타버스 관련 종합지원 인프라)를 전국 4대 권역으로 확산하여 메타버스 지역 거점을 구축하는 사업이다.

전국 4대권역은 동북권(경북/강원/대구), 동남권(부산/울산/경남), 충청권(대전/충남‧북),호남권(광주/전남‧북/제주)을 말한다.

이번 사업은 구미시와 경북도, 김영식 국회의원실이 공조하여 과기부와 기재부에 수차례 사업을 건의하고 설득한 끝에 올해 정부사업으로 반영될 수 있었다.

공모 신청 당시 구미시장 당선인 신분이었던 김장호 구미시장은 국회를 방문, 지역구 국회의원인 구자근, 김영식 의원과 함께 백방으로 뛰어다니며, 권성동 원내대표와 합심하여 원팀으로서 동북권 컨소시엄의 완성도 높은 사업계획과 추진 당위성을 피력하여 최종 사업이 선정될 수 있도록 큰 역할을 했다.

본 사업의 협약과정에서 당초 컨소시엄을 이룬 경북과 강원 이외에 대구까지 참여하면서 전국 국토의 1/3 이상을 차지하는 동북권의 메타버스 산업 생태계를 활성화하며 동반성장의 토대를 마련할 것으로 보인다.

시는 동북권 메타버스 허브 구축사업을 수주함에 따라 현재 기획중인 5G 특화망 기반 메타버스 산업단지 실증사업을 비롯한 메타버스 관련 사업들의 추진 동력을 얻게 되었으며 향후 구미시를 중심으로 한 경북 메타버스 융합산업 클러스터 조성도 탄력을 받을 것으로 보고 있다.

김장호 구미시장은 “메타버스 디바이스부터 콘텐츠 제작지원, 인재양성, 기업육성까지 원스톱으로 지원받을 수 있는 구미시에서 메타버스의 꿈을 이루어나가길 바란다”며, 구미시로 이전 또는 창업하는 기업에게 최선을 다해 지원할 것을 밝혔다.
