경북도에 따르면 이번 업무협약에는 강성조 경북도 행정부지사, 독일 프라운호퍼 IKTS(Fraunhofer Institute For Ceramic Technologies and Systems)알렉산더 미카엘리스(Alexander Michaelis)소장, 구미 부시장, 우병구 구미전자정보기술원장 등이 참석했다.

이번 업무협약을 통해 4개 기관은 ▷메타버스 글로벌 공동기술개발사업 추진 ▷공동연구개발 및 사업활동을 위한 플랫폼ㆍ사업조직의 구성 ▷상호 이익을 도모하고 상호 목적 달성을 위한 기타 형태의 협력을 추진하기로 했다.

프라운호퍼연구협회는 막스플랑크(Max Planck Institute)와 함께 독일을 대표하는 연구기관으로 독일 전역에 75개 연구소를 보유한 응용과학기술분야 최고 연구기관이다.

특히, 프라운호퍼 IKTS는 유럽 최대 규모의 첨단 세라믹 소재 연구소로 메타버스 융합형 산업 진단 검사장비, 인공지능(AI) 기반 머신러닝 개발을 선도하고 있다.

경북도는 정부의‘글로벌 신산업 혁신특구 정책’과 연계해 세계적 수준의 메타버스 테스트베드 구축, 도전적 연구개발 지원, 국내 메타버스 융합산업을 선도해 글로벌 진출 전진기지육성을 위한 글로벌 메타버스 혁신특구 조성 사업을 준비하고 있다.

또 지역의 강점인 5G 시험 테스트베드 인프라, 공공데이터 센터, XR디바이스 개발지원센터 등 기업과 연구기관이 공동으로 활용할 수 있는 기본 인프라를 기반으로 기업단지, 연구단지, 콘텐츠 서비스 단지가 집적화 된 글로벌 메타버스 혁신특구를 만들어 갈 구상이다.

강성조 경북도 행정부지사는“글로벌 메타버스 혁신특구를 통해 1970년대 경북이 제조산업을 이끌어 나갔듯이 메타버스 신산업으로 경북이 대한민국 산업 대전환을 선도해 나가야 한다”며“프라운호퍼 IKTS 등 국제 연구소와 글로벌 기업 유치, 협업을 통해 경북을 세계대표 메타버스 주도지역으로 만들어 나가자”고 강조했다.

한편, 경북도는 메타버스 공동기술개발을 시작으로 프라운호퍼 연구소 공동연구센터 유치, 메타버스 관련 원천기술 공동연구 및 기술사업화를 본격적으로 추진하여 도내 메타버스 관련 기업의 R&D자립화 및 혁신을 이끌어 나갈 계획이다.
