경북경찰청은 27일 “이 도지사를 업무상 배임 혐의로 지난해 12월 불구속 송치했다”며 “검찰의 보완 수사 요구에 따라 현재 추가 수사를 진행 중”이라고 밝혔다. 이 도청 전·현직 공무원 6명도 같은 혐의로 불구속 송치됐다.

경찰에 따르면 이 도지사는 2022년 포항에서 열린 특정 인터넷 언론사 주최 행사와 관련해 경북도 예산으로 보조금을 지원해 해당 언론사에 부당한 혜택을 준 혐의를 받고 있다.

경찰은 지난해 7월 이 도지사 관사를 압수수색해 관련 서류와 휴대전화를 확보했으며, 같은 해 11월부터는 경북도 전·현직 공무원들을 피의자 신분으로 전환해 조사해 왔다.

이 도지사는 혐의를 전면 부인해 왔으며, 건강상 이유 등을 들어 경찰의 출석 요구에 응하지 않다가 지난해 12월 한 차례 조사를 받은 것으로 알려졌다. 경찰 관계자는 “사건은 이미 검찰에 송치됐지만 보완 수사 요구가 있어 추가 조사를 진행 중”이라며 “수사 중인 사안인 만큼 구체적인 내용은 밝히기 어렵다”고 말했다.
