구미시는 5일 시청 대회의실에서 LIG넥스원㈜과 방산 전용 생산기지 구축을 위한 투자양해각서(MOU)를 체결했다. 이번 협약에 따라 LIG넥스원은 총 3,700억 원을 투입해 구미 지역에 방산 전용 생산공장을 신축·확충하고, 200명의 신규 고용을 창출할 예정이다.

이날 협약식에는 박배호 LIG넥스원㈜ 부사장을 비롯해 이철우 경상북도지사, 김장호 구미시장, 구자근 국회의원, 박교상 구미시의회 의장과 도·시의원, 관계기관·단체장 등 30여 명이 참석해 K-방산 경쟁력 강화와 구미 국가산업단지 고도화를 위한 협력 의지를 공유했다.

이번 투자로 구축될 방산 전용 생산기지에는 유도무기와 항공·우주 무기체계 핵심 구성품 조립을 비롯해 성능시험, 체계 연동시험, 최종 조립, 납품 전 품질검사 및 검증 공정까지 첨단 방산 생산의 전 과정이 집약된다. 연구·제조·시험·양산을 아우르는 완결형 생산체계가 구축되면서, 구미는 단순 생산 거점을 넘어 ‘K-방산 완결형 생산 허브’로 위상을 공고히 하게 된다.
