‘바다식목일’은 바닷속 생태계 보호의 중요성과 바다사막화의 심각성을 국민에게 알리고, 바다숲의 가치와 조성 성과에 대한 인식 및 참여 확대를 위해 지난 2012년 지정된 법정 기념일로 매년 5월 10일 개최된다.

포항시는 지난해 12월 19일 해양수산부 제12회 바다식목일 기념행사 개최지 공모계획에 따라 유치계획서를 제출했고, 이후 행사장소 타당성조사 검토 후 최종 개최지로 선정됐다.

포항시는 해양수산부, 경상북도와 긴밀히 협력할 예정이다. 특히 바다숲에 대한 범국민적인 인식 향상을 위해 해양분야 블루카본 등을 주제로 국·내외 전문가가 참여하는 국제포럼 등 학술행사도 함께 연계해 포스코 국제관과 호미곶 광장 일원에서 개최할 예정이다.

이강덕 포항시장은 “최근 급격한 기후변화 등으로 미래산업 자원의 보고인 바다숲이 황폐해지고 있다”며 “올해 제12회 바다식목일 기념행사 개최를 계기로 바다숲 및 블루카본 조성 활성화를 포항시가 선도해 다음 세대에 건강한 바다를 물려주기 위해 노력해 나갈 것”이라고 말했다.

한편 포항시는 지난해 해양수산부 공모사업 바다숲조성사업과 조피볼락산란서식장조성사업에 총사업비 약 70억 원, 블루카본센터 건립에 400억 원을 확보하는 등 지구온난화 및 기후변화 대응에 적극 노력하고 있다.

   Meanwhile, Pohang City is actively working to respond to global warming and climate change, securing a total project cost of about 7 billion won for the sea forest creation project and rockfish spawning habitat creation project as part of a public contest by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries last year, and 40 billion won for the construction of the Blue Carbon Center.
