당시 이 지역에서는 이만희 의원의 단수 공천을 두고“이미 리더십을 잃었고, 무엇보다 지역원로들과 영천시민, 청도군민과 시민단체의 ‘이만희 공천배제’라는 건의문을 공관위원들이 사실과 부합한다고 확인하고서도 이튿날 바로 단수공천을 발표한 것은 사전에 낙점이 되었다는 의구심을 가질 수밖에 없고, 공천이 곧 당선인 이 지역에서 굳이 면접 다음 날 단수로 발표한 것은 지역 민심을 무시한 처사로 밖에 볼 수 없다“고 반발해왔다.

김예비후보는 ”단수발표 과정에서 공관위원장과 원내대표의‘지역구 관리가 잘 된 지역이라 단수 추천했다’ 는 발언에 지역의 많은 원로들과 시민들은 그동안 강조해 온 공정한 시스템 공천이라는 취지에 맞추어 보아도 과연 경북지역에서 두 번 연속 시장선거에 패배하여 지역 민심을 이반시키고, 자기 안위만 생각하며 지역주민의 의견과 지역 발전에는 관심도 없는 파렴치한 국회의원을 지역 관리를 잘해서 단수 공천했다는 발표는 도저히 이해할 수가 없다며 도저히 받아들일 수 없다는 입장“이라고 주장했다. 

영천청도 지역은 원로들과 시민단체가 직접 나서 지역 민심이 반영된 후보를 추대, 이만희 의원을 심판한다는 취지로 범시민연대를 결성했다. 김경원 예비후보는 경선 참여 제의에 전격적으로 국민의힘을 탈당해 참여하기로 결정했다고 밝혔다.

김 예비후보는 범시민연대에게 모든 경선 내용과 절차에 대해 위임하였으며 범시민연대 경선에 대비한 선거 전략과 지역 민심을 담은 정책 등을 지속적으로 공개하며 “ 공천 과정의 부당함이나 지역 민심이반을 지켜보며 그동안 몸 담았던 국민의힘을 떠나 무소속으로 출마한다는 것에 큰 부담감을 느꼈으나 결국 지역에서 정치를 한다는 의미와 지역 민심을 반영하지 못한 중앙당의 불합리성을 경고하기 위해 총선승리가 필요하며 이를 가능하게 해준 지역민들의 성원에 반드시 보답하겠다”며 탈당의 변을 남겼다.
