지난 2일 국민의힘 탈당과 동시에 무소속 출마를 선언한 김 예비후보는 5일영천·청도 범시민연대의 무소속후보 단일화에 전격 합의했다.
지난달 17일 국민의힘 공관위에서 이만희 의원을 단수 추천하자 영천·청도 예비후보들을 비롯한 지역민과 시민단체들의 반발이 이어졌다.
이와 함께 이의신청과 경선요구가 빗발쳤지만 받아들여지지 않자 시민단체를 중심으로 직접 지역 민심을 반영한 후보를 추대하자는 공감대가 형성된 것으로 알려진다.
이에 따라 구성된 범시민연대는 예비후보들에게 시민후보 선출을 위한 경선 참여를 제의했고 김경원 예비후보 역시 “합의안을 원안대로 수용한다”고 밝히며 합의문에 서명했다.
김 예비후보는“ 지난 17년간 지역에서 정치를 하고 많은 지역민과 교류하면서 중앙에서의 경험한 행정과 경험을 바탕으로 지역발전을 위해 끊임없이 연구하며 지역 정치에 임했으나 지역 현실을 외면한 정치권과 지역 리더들의 반목과 불신으로 인한 지역의 쇠락을 막지못했다”며 “정치적 책임을 통감하며 소통과 화합으로 지역을 다시 발전 시키는 것이 유일한 출마 이유”라고 말했다.
합의문 제출 후 영천시 충혼탑을 참배한 김경원 예비후보는 “영천은 국가적 재난이었던 임진왜란과 6·25 전쟁에서 절체절명의 시기 민관군이 합심을 하여 승전보를 울리고 반격의 기회로 삼았던 저력의 고장이고 자부심이 살아있는 곳이다. 호국영령들에게 지역민들의 승리가 될 수 있도록 최선을 다할 것이라고 맹세하였다”라며 무소속 후보로의 행보를 시작했다.
