19일 오전 10시 50분경 청도군 화양읍 삼신리 청도소싸움 경기장 인근 경부선 철로에서 동대구역을 출발해 경남 진주로 향하던 무궁화호 1903호 열차가 선로 근처에서 작업 중이던 근로자 7명을 충돌했다.

이 사고로 인해 7명 중 2명이 현장에서 심정지 상태로 병원에 이송됐으나 사망했고 나머지 5명 중 4명이 중상, 1명이 경상을 입었다. 중상자 중 일부는 상태가 위중한 것으로 전해진다.

사고를 당한 근로자들은 대부분 구조물 안전점검 전문업체 소속이며 일부는 코레일 직원으로 알려졌다.

이들은 최근 폭우로 인한 경부선 철도 남성현역~청도역 구간 비탈면 구조물 피해를 육안으로 점검하는 작업을 수행 중이었다.

사고 당시 근로자들은 안전 진단 작업을 마치고 도보로 이동하는 과정에서 뒤쪽에서 접근한 무궁화호 열차에 충돌당한 것으로 파악됐다.

청도소방서는 사고 원인과 관련해 "무궁화호 열차가 전기동력분산식 열차(전기차)라서 일반 열차에 비해 소음이 적다"며 "작업자들이 열차 접근을 인지하지 못했을 가능성이 있다"고 설명했다.

코레일 대구본부 측도 "전기차는 생활 소음만 있어도 소리가 잘 안 들린다"며 현재 정확한 사고 경위를 파악 중이라고 밝혔다.

사고 열차에는 승객 89명이 탑승하고 있었다. 승객 중 부상자는 없는 것으로 확인됐다.

사고 구간은 약 1시간가량 운행이 정지됐으며, 현재는 상행 선로를 이용해 상·하행 열차가 교대 운행하고 있어 일부 열차 운행에 지연이 발생하고 있다.

소방당국은 헬기 1대, 장비 16대, 인력 65명을 투입해 부상자들을 신속히 병원으로 이송했다. 중상자들은 경산 세명병원과 경주 동국대병원으로 분산 이송됐다.
