【브레이크뉴스 경주】박희경 기자=한국원자력환경공단(이사장 조성돈)은 11일 경주시 문무대왕면 봉길리에 위치한 중저준위 방사성폐기물 처분시설에 준위별 모든 방사성폐기물(이하 방폐물)의 처분을 시작했다고 밝혔다.

공단은 연말까지 고리원전 500드럼, 월성원전 482드럼, 원자력연구원 678드럼, 한울원전 808드럼 등 중저준위 방폐물을 인수하여, 전년대비 약 23% 증가한 4,100여 드럼을 인수할 예정이다.

한국원자력환경공단 조성돈 이사장은 “국가 방폐물 관리 전담기관으로서 국민들이 안심할 수있도록 안전하고 투명한 방폐물 관리를 통해 국민의 신뢰도를 제고하기위해 최선을 다하겠다.”고 말했다.

한편, 방폐물은 농도와 발열량 등에 따라 고준위, 중준위, 저준위, 극저준위 방폐물로 구분되며, 이번 처분한 중준위 방폐물은 지난 8월 월성원전에서 인수한 것이다. 이로써 중저준위 방폐물 처분시설에는 준위별 모든 방폐물의 처분을 시작할 수 있게 되었다.

Meanwhile, radioactive waste is classified into high-level, intermediate-level, low-level, and ultra-low-level radioactive waste according to concentration and calorific value, and the intermediate-level radioactive waste disposed of this time was acquired from Wolseong Nuclear Power Plant last August. With this, the intermediate-level radioactive waste disposal facility can now begin disposing of all radioactive waste by level.
