【브레이크뉴스 경주】박영재  기자=한국원자력환경공단(이사장 조성돈)은 10일 열린 제211회 원자력안전위원회 회의에서 대전 RI(방사성동위원소) 폐기물 관리시설의 영구정지 및 경주 처분시설 내 동위원소 폐기물 처리 설비 도입에 대한 건설·운영 변경허가를 승인받았다고 밝혔다.

공단에 따르면, 대전 RI 관리시설은 지난 2024년까지 모든 폐기물을 반출한 상태이며, 이번 영구정지 허가로 방사성 오염 제거 작업 등을 거쳐 2030년 이후 운영 종료를 목표로 하고 있다.

이와 함께, 공단은 최근 급증하고 있는 RI 동물사체 등의 특수 폐기물을 보다 안전하게 처리하기 위해 경주 처분시설 내 건조·냉동저장 설비 도입을 추진해 왔으며, 이번 회의에서 해당 설비에 대한 변경허가를 최종 승인받았다.

조성돈 한국원자력환경공단 이사장은 “이번 승인으로 원전에서 발생하는 방폐물뿐 아니라 동위원소 기반 폐기물(RI)까지 안전하게 처리할 수 있는 기반을 갖추게 됐다”며, “앞으로도 방폐물 전 주기에 걸친 통합 솔루션을 통해 국민의 안전을 최우선으로 하는 방폐물 관리 체계 구축에 힘쓰겠다”고 말했다.

한편, 한국원자력환경공단은 경북 경주를 중심으로 원전 해체·운영 과정에서 발생하는 중저준위 방사성 폐기물은 물론, 의료·산업·연구용으로 사용된 RI 폐기물까지 안전하게 인수·처리하는 국내 유일의 방폐물 전문 관리기관이다.

Meanwhile, the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency is the only specialized radioactive waste management organization in Korea that safely receives and processes not only low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste generated during the decommissioning and operation of nuclear power plants, but also RI waste used for medical, industrial, and research purposes, centered around Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do.
