【브레이크뉴스 울릉】전종환 기자=울릉군은 통구미 거북바위 공중화장실이 장애물 없는 생활환경(Barrier Free, BF) 인증제도에서 ‘우수’ 등급을 획득했다고 23일 밝혔다.
BF 인증제도는 장애인, 노인, 임산부 등 교통약자를 포함한 모든 사람이 시설을 보다 안전하고 편리하게 이용할 수 있도록 계획·설계·시공됐는지를 평가해 인증하는 제도다.
울릉군은 지난해 8월 한국장애인개발원에 BF 인증을 신청했으며, 이후 현장실사와 심의위원회 심의를 거쳐 지적사항을 보완한 끝에 올해 5월 최종적으로 인증을 받았다. 인증 유효기간은 2035년 5월까지로, 10년간 유지된다.
통구미 거북바위 공중화장실은 지난 2021년 태풍 ‘마이삭’으로 유실된 후, 울릉군은 2023년 7월 부지를 매입하고, 12월 어항개발사업과 국지도 90호선 도로 구역 조정 협의를 마쳤다. 이후 경상북도에서 도비 6,000만 원, 군비 1억8,000만 원 등 총 2억4,000만 원을 투입해 2024년 11월 말 공사를 완료했다.
화장실은 연면적 32.64㎡ 규모로, 남녀 장애인 전용 화장실과 기저귀 교환대 등 다양한 편의시설을 갖추고 있다.
남한권 울릉군수는 “이번 공중화장실은 울릉군 내 최초로 BF 인증을 받은 시설”이라며 “앞으로도 누구나 안심하고 사용할 수 있는 공중화장실 환경을 조성하고, 지속적인 유지관리에 힘쓰겠다”고 밝혔다.
이어 “군민 여러분도 공중도덕을 지켜 깨끗한 화장실 문화 정착에 동참해 달라”고 당부했다.

After the Tonggumi Turtle Rock public restroom was washed away by Typhoon Maysak in 2021, Ulleung-gun purchased the site in July 2023 and completed negotiations for the fishing port development project and the adjustment of the National Route 90 road zone in December. Afterwards, Gyeongsangbuk-do invested a total of 240 million won, including 60 million won from the provincial government and 180 million won from the county, and completed construction at the end of November 2024.
The restroom has a total floor area of 32.64㎡ and is equipped with various amenities such as separate restrooms for the disabled and diaper changing tables.
The Ulleung-gun mayor in the southern part of Korea said, “This public restroom is the first facility in Ulleung-gun to receive BF certification,” and added, “We will continue to create a public restroom environment that anyone can use with confidence and strive for continuous maintenance.” He then asked, “Please join us in maintaining public morality and establishing a clean restroom culture.”
