‘울릉공항 활주로 연장 추진위원회’(수석위원장 이정태)는 지난 6월 24일 국회를 찾아 더불어민주당 이정문 의원(충남 천안병, 중앙당 정책위 수석부의장)과 문진석 의원(충남 천안갑, 국토교통위원회 소속)을 잇달아 만나 활주로 연장의 필요성과 시급성을 설명했다.

추진위는 이 자리에서 “현재 건설 중인 활주로 길이 1,200m로는 향후 기상 악화 시 안정적인 항공기 운항이 어렵다”며, “보다 안전하고 지속가능한 항공 서비스 제공을 위해 활주로 연장이 필수적”이라고 강조했다.

이에 대해 이정문 의원은 “정부와 긴밀히 협의해 울릉공항이 안전하게 개항할 수 있도록 국회 차원의 역할을 다하겠다”고 화답했다.  문진석 의원도 “국토위 소속 의원으로서 관련 제도적 지원을 아끼지 않겠다”고 밝혔다.

같은 날 추진위는 울릉공항에 취항 예정인 소형항공사 ‘섬에어’의 최용덕 대표와 관계자들과도 면담을 갖고, 활주로 연장이 항공사 운영에 미치는 영향과 운항 안정성 확보 방안 등을 두고 심도 있는 논의를 이어갔다.

울릉공항은 울릉도 및 독도의 접근성을 크게 개선할 국가 주요 SOC(사회간접자본)로, 2028년 개항을 목표로 현재 공사가 진행 중이다. 하지만, 불규칙한 기상조건과 짧은 활주로 길이에 따른 안전성 논란이 지속되며 활주로 연장 요구가 꾸준히 제기돼 왔다.

추진위는 앞으로도 정기적인 국회 방문과 중앙정부 설득 활동을 통해 예산 확보와 정책 반영을 위한 노력을 계속 이어갈 방침이라고 밝혔다.

The voices of local residents calling for the extension of the Ulleung Airport runway have once again resonated in the National Assembly.

The Promotion Committee stated that it plans to continue efforts to secure a budget and reflect it in policies through regular visits to the National Assembly and persuading the central government.
