이번 사업에는 총 72억 원이 투입됐으며, 시는 △가동보 3개소 설치 △퇴적토 5만㎥ 준설 △상시 유지수 공급 체계 구축 등을 완료했다. 특히 태풍이 본격화하기 전 주요 공정을 마무리해 안정성을 높였다.

사업을 통해 퇴적토 준설로 통수단면을 확보하고 형산강 물을 북천 상류로 끌어들여 사계절 맑은 물이 흐르도록 개선했다. 그 결과 매년 건천으로 변하던 북천은 도심 속 쾌적한 하천으로 새롭게 탈바꿈했다.

현장을 둘러본 주낙영 시장은 “북천 유지수 확보사업은 단순한 하천 정비가 아니라 APEC 정상회의의 품격을 높이고 경주의 위상을 세계에 알리는 핵심 프로젝트”라며 “시민에게는 쾌적한 휴식처를, 세계인에게는 경주의 새로운 매력을 보여주는 계기가 될 것”이라고 강조했다.

경주시는 이번 사업이 정상회의 이후에도 시민 여가·생태문화 공간으로 활용돼 도시 경쟁력을 높이는 지속 가능한 자산이 될 것으로 기대하고 있다.

한편 북천은 회의장인 경주화백컨벤션센터(HICO)와 인접해 있어, 정상회의 기간 세계 각국 정상들에게 경주의 ‘첫인상 공간’이 될 전망이다.

Meanwhile, Bukcheon is adjacent to the Gyeongju Hwabaek Convention Center (HICO), the conference venue, and is expected to serve as a "first impression" of Gyeongju for world leaders during the summit.
