【브레이크뉴스 경주】박영재 기자=경주시가 차세대 소형모듈원전(SMR) 1호기 유치를 위한 범시민 추진단을 발족하고 본격적인 유치전에 돌입했다.

경주시 원전범시민대책위원회(이하 범대위)는 13일 청사 내 알천홀에서 제3차 전체회의를 열고 ‘i-SMR 1호기 경주유치추진단’ 출범을 의결했다.

추진단은 범대위 전체 위원 37명으로 구성되며, 유치 부지 결정 시까지 한시적으로 운영된다.

앞으로 △범시민 유치 서명운동 전개 △유치 결의대회 개최 △대정부 및 국회 건의 활동 △전략적 언론 홍보 등을 중점 추진할 계획이다. ‘i-SMR 유치 기원’ 범시민 서명운동을 통해 채택된 결의문은 한국수력원자력에 전달해 공식적인 유치 의사를 표명할 예정이다.

이날 채택된 결의문에서 범대위는 “경주는 월성을 중심으로 원전 산업 전 주기가 집적된 대한민국 대표 원자력 도시”라고 강조했다.

이어 “문무대왕과학연구소와 SMR 산업단지, 전문 인력과 지역의 축적된 경험은 SMR 1호기 도입의 최적지 조건을 갖추고 있다”고 밝혔다.

범대위는 결의문에서 △경주시가 SMR 1호기의 최적지임을 분명히 하고 △정부의 조속한 지정 결단을 촉구하며 △안전과 상생을 원칙으로 책임 있게 추진하겠다는 입장을 공식화했다.

경주는 한국수력원자력 본사 등 주요 원자력 기관이 집적된 지역으로, 연구개발(R&D)부터 실증·운영까지 이어지는 산업 전 주기 기반을 갖춘 국가 원전산업의 핵심 거점으로 평가된다.

김남용 범대위 위원장은 “SMR 1호기 유치는 경주의 중장기 성장 기반을 다지는 전략적 사업”이라며 “범시민적 역량을 결집해 체계적으로 추진하겠다”고 말했다.

주낙영 경주시장은 “이번 추진단 출범은 SMR 유치를 향한 시민의 뜻을 분명히 한 계기”라며 “행정과 정책 역량을 총동원해 실질적인 성과로 연결하겠다”고 밝혔다.

Gyeongju City has launched a citizens' task force to attract the first next-generation small modular reactor (SMR) unit and has launched a full-scale bid.

The Gyeongju City Nuclear Power Citizens' Committee (hereinafter referred to as the Committee) held its third general meeting at Alcheon Hall in the city hall on the 13th and approved the launch of the "i-SMR Unit 1 Gyeongju Attraction Task Force."

The Task Force, comprised of 37 members, will operate temporarily until the host site is selected.

Going forward, the Committee plans to prioritize initiatives such as: 1) launching a citizen signature campaign, 2) holding a rally to resolve the issue, 3) submitting proposals to the government and the National Assembly, and 4) strategic media outreach. The resolution adopted through the citizen signature campaign to "Pray for the Attraction of i-SMR" will be delivered to Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) to formally declare its intent to host the reactor.

In the resolution adopted that day, the Pan-Committee emphasized, "Gyeongju is Korea's leading nuclear power city, with the entire nuclear power industry cycle centered around Wolseong."

The committee continued, "The King Munmu Science Research Institute, the SMR Industrial Complex, the specialized workforce, and the region's accumulated experience make Gyeongju the optimal location for the introduction of the first SMR."

In the resolution, the Pan-Committee clearly stated that Gyeongju is the optimal site for the first SMR, urged the government to make a swift decision on designating the first SMR, and formalized its position to responsibly pursue the project based on the principles of safety and coexistence.

Gyeongju is home to major nuclear power organizations, including the headquarters of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, and is considered a key hub for the national nuclear power industry, boasting a foundation for the entire industrial cycle, from research and development (R&D) to demonstration and operation.

Chairman Kim Nam-yong of the Pan-Committee stated, "Attracting the first SMR is a strategic project that will solidify the foundation for Gyeongju's mid- to long-term growth. We will systematically pursue this project by mobilizing the capabilities of all citizens."

Gyeongju Mayor Joo Nak-young said, “The launch of this task force is an opportunity to clearly demonstrate the citizens’ will to attract SMR,” and added, “We will mobilize all administrative and policy capabilities to achieve tangible results.”
