이번 시상식은 23일(현지시간) 미국 뉴욕 플라자호텔에서 열린 코리아소사이어티(The Korea Society) 연례 만찬에서 진행됐다. 캐슬린 스티븐스(Kathleen Stephens) 코리아소사이어티 이사장은 “장인화 회장이 미국 산업 생태계 재건과 지속 가능한 공급망 구축을 지원하며 양국 간 유대 강화에 크게 이바지했다”며 “이 같은 공로를 높이 평가해 올해의 수상자로 선정했다”고 밝혔다.
밴플리트상은 한국전쟁 당시 한국군 현대화에 기여한 밴 플리트 장군을 기리기 위해 1992년 제정된 상으로, 한·미 간 이해와 협력, 우호 증진에 두드러진 공헌을 한 개인이나 단체에 수여된다. 역대 수상자로는 조지 W. 부시 전 미국 대통령, 김대중 전 대통령, SK그룹 최태원 회장, 그룹 방탄소년단(BTS) 등이 있다. 올해는 장 회장과 함께 미 의회 한국연구모임(CSGK·Congressional Study Group on Korea)이 공동 수상했다.
장 회장은 수상 소감에서 “한·미 동맹의 가치를 높여 온 코리아소사이어티로부터 밴플리트상을 받게 된 것은 더 없는 영광이자 특별한 의미”라며 “포스코그룹에게 미국은 성장과 도약의 출발을 함께한 가장 굳건한 파트너였다”고 말했다.
그는 이어 “포항제철소 설립 과정에서 미국 철강 산업이 큰 영감을 주었고, 1972년 포스코의 첫 대미(對美) 수출은 세계 시장으로 향하는 관문이 되었으며, 1994년 뉴욕증권거래소 상장은 포스코 성장 역사에 중요한 이정표가 됐다”고 회고했다.
포스코그룹은 장 회장 취임 이후 철강을 비롯해 이차전지소재, 에너지 등 핵심 사업 전반에서 대미(對美) 투자를 적극 확대하고 있다. 지난 4월에는 현대자동차그룹과 함께 미국 루이지애나주 제철소 합작 투자에 관한 업무협약(MOU)을 체결했으며, 유타주에서는 국내 최초로 리튬 직접추출(DLE·Direct Lithium Extraction) 기술 실증사업을 추진 중이다. 또한 북미산 LNG 장기 구매 계약을 맺는 등 양국 간 산업 협력과 공급망 강화에도 힘을 쏟고 있다.
장 회장은 “자동차, 조선, 에너지 등 다양한 산업의 핵심 소재 공급을 넘어, AI 기반 인텔리전트 팩토리(Intelligent Factory) 실현 등 미래 혁신 파트너십을 통해 미국 제조업의 새로운 르네상스를 함께 열어가겠다”며 “미국의 영원한 파트너(Life-long Partner)로서 미래를 향한 여정을 함께하겠다”고 포부를 밝혔다.

The award ceremony took place on the 23rd (local time) at the Korea Society's annual dinner held at the Plaza Hotel in New York. The Van Fleet Award, established in 1992 to honor General Van Fleet, who contributed to the modernization of the Korean military during the Korean War, is presented to individuals or organizations who have made outstanding contributions to understanding, cooperation, and friendship between Korea and the United States. Past recipients include former US President George W. Bush, former President Kim Dae-jung, SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, and BTS. This year, Chairman Chang and the Congressional Study Group on Korea (CSGK) shared the award.
In his acceptance speech, Chairman Chang stated, "It is a profound honor and special significance to receive the Van Fleet Award from the Korea Society, which has consistently enhanced the value of the Korea-US alliance. For POSCO Group, the United States has been our steadfast partner, accompanying us on our journey of growth and advancement."
He continued, "The American steel industry provided significant inspiration during the establishment of the Pohang Steelworks. POSCO's first exports to the US in 1972 served as a gateway to the global market, and its listing on the New York Stock Exchange in 1994 marked a significant milestone in POSCO's growth."
Since Chairman Chang's inauguration, POSCO Group has actively expanded its investment in the US across its core businesses, including steel, secondary battery materials, and energy. In April, the company signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Hyundai Motor Group to establish a joint venture for a steel mill in Louisiana, USA. In Utah, the company is also pursuing Korea's first direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology demonstration project. Furthermore, the company is committed to strengthening industrial cooperation and supply chains between the two countries, including by signing a long-term purchase agreement for North American LNG.
Chairman Jang stated, “Beyond supplying core materials for various industries such as automobiles, shipbuilding, and energy, we will open a new renaissance in American manufacturing together through future innovation partnerships such as realizing AI-based intelligent factories,” and expressed his ambition, saying, “As a life-long partner of the United States, we will journey together toward the future.”
