동구청은 올해 4월 아양교 양측 난간에 팔공산 형상으로 디자인한 1.7∼5.8m 높이의 안전시설물과 경관조명을 설치했다.

이는 앞서 동구청이 아양교에 CCTV(폐쇄회로) 4대와 난간 적외선 감지기 4대, 방송 스피커 4대를 설치했음에도 5년 간 60여명이 투신하는 등 사망 사고가 근절되지 않자 이에 대한 대책으로 마련됐다. 사업비는 11억이 투입됐다.

해당 구조물은 투신사고 방지를 위해 최고 5.8m 달하는 높이로 설치되면서 아양교에서 금호강을 바라보았을 때 시야가 차단되고 답답한 느낌을 줘 조망을 저해한다는 민원이 이어지고 있다.

동구의 한 주민은 동구청 홈페이지를 통해 "아양교 다리에서 보는 금호강 경치는 그 자체로 너무 아름답다. 갑자기 흉물스러운 구조물이 들어서면서 아름다웠던 경관을 해치고 있다."며 민원을 제기했다.

이에 대해 동구청 관계자는 “민원이 있는 것도 사실이지만 구조물 설치전보다 투신사고가 줄었다.”면서 “경관에 대한 민원은 미적인 요소를 더해 최소화 하는 방식으로 추진하겠다.”고 말했다.

하지만 한편에서는 투신 방지를 위해 경관을 해치면서까지 설치된 구조물의 실효성에도 의문이라는 지적이 나오고 있다. 취재 결과 구조물 사이 간격이 넓지는 않지만 사람이 들어갈 공간은 충분한 것으로 확인됐다.<사진2>

실제, 구조물이 설치돼 있었던 지난 9월 한 남성이 구조물 사이를 비집고 들어가 투신하는 사고가 발생하면서 “큰 예산이 투입된 것에 비해 구조물의 투신방지 효과는 미미하다"는 지적이 일고 있다.
