상주시(시장 강영석)는 늘어나는 유기동물 발생 방지 및 구조·보호에 소요되는 사회적 비용을 줄이기 위해 ‘마당개 중성화 지원사업'을 추진하기로 했다.

상주시에 따르면 마당개 중성화 지원사업은 마당(실외)에서 기르는 5개월 이상 개 150마리(암컷)를 대상으로 새끼를 가지지 못하도록 무료로 시술을 하는 사업이다. 개 소유자가 기초생활수급자, 차상위계층, 고령자(만 65세 이상)인 경우 우선적으로 지원받을 수 있으며 지원 신청은 6월 4일까지 읍면동 행정복지센터에 하면 된다.

마당개 중성화사업은 개를 인식할 수 있는 정보가 담긴 마이크로칩을 몸에 삽입하는 내장형 동물등록이 필수다. 미등록 개는 동물등록 절차를 병행하여야 하며 동물등록비로 자부담 1만원이 소요된다.

이현균 축산과장은 “마당개의 반복적인 출산으로 강아지가 유기되고, 유기된 강아지가 들개가 되는 악순환이 계속되고 있다”며 “책임질 수 있을 만큼만 키워 더 이상 유기되는 동물이 발생하지 않기를 바란다”라고 말했다.
