【브레이크뉴스 대구】박은정 기자=  대구시는 미국 보그워너社(대표 프레드릭 리살데)와 미래차 전동화부품 R&D센터 설립 투자유치 협약을 체결했다고 10일 밝혔다.

보그워너社(BorgWarner Inc.)는 1928년 설립, 미국에 본사를 두고 전 세계 24개국에 93개 제조공장 및 연구소 등을 보유하고 있는 글로벌 자동차 부품기업이다. 

최근 글로벌 자동차 시장 트렌드 변화에 따라 전동화 부품회사로 전환을 위해 전기차, 하이브리드 자동차용 전동화부품 개발에 주력하며 미래모빌리티로의 전환을 가속화하고 있다. 

이번 투자협약을 통해 대구에 외투법인인 보그워너DTC(유)(보그워너대구테크센터)를 신설하고, 총 4,360만불(620억원 정도)을 투자해 대구국가산업단지 내 연구시설부지 10,616㎡ 규모에 미래모빌리티용 전동화 구동모터 R&D센터를 건립할 계획이다.

현재 보그워너社는 창녕, 충주, 평택 등 국내 8개 사업장을 보유하고 있으며, 대구 성서산업단지에 위치한 보그워너창녕 부설연구소와 더불어 자동차용 전동화 구동모터에 대한 연구개발 협업을 진행해 왔다. 

앞으로 보그워너DTC(유)설립을 통해 전기모터 연구개발에 전념할 계획이며, 이곳에서 구동모터, 구동시스템 성능 평가 및 연구개발이 이루어질 예정이다. 

대구시는 대구국가산업단지 2단계 구역에 모터 특화단지를 조성하여 모터기업 집적화, 모터 연구개발, 선도기술 고도화 및 사업화를 지원할 예정이다. 

군터 랍 보그워너 PDS(Power Drive Systems) 사업부 부사장은 “대구는 전기차 모터산업을 중점 육성하고 있고, 자동차부품 생산기반과 산학협력 체계가 잘 갖추어져 있다”며, “앞으로 보그워너의 역량과 기술을 집중적으로 투자해 보그워너DTC(유)의 신사업이 성공적으로 전개될 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다”고  밝혔다.

홍준표 대구시장은 “전기차, UAM, 로봇 등 지역 미래산업 육성을 위해 전기모터는 필수적인 부품이며 관련 시장이 급성장 중이다”며, “보그워너社가 앞으로 인재채용과 함께 대구의 미래모빌리티 산업을 이끄는 견인차 역할을 충실히 해줄 것으로 기대한다”고 전했다.

 Daegu City announced on the 10th that it had signed an investment attraction agreement with Borg Warner (CEO Frederick Rizalde) of the United States to establish an R&D center for future vehicles.

Through this investment agreement, Borg Warner DTC (Borg Warner Daegu Tech Center), a foreign-invested corporation, was newly established in Daegu, and a total of 43.6 million dollars (about 62 billion won) was invested in a 10,616 m² research facility site in the Daegu National Industrial Complex. It plans to build an electric drive motor R&D center for future mobility.

Currently, Borg Warner has 8 domestic business sites, including Changnyeong, Chungju, and Pyeongtaek, and has been conducting research and development cooperation on electric drive motors for automobiles with the Changnyeong affiliated research institute of Borg Warner located in Seongseo Industrial Complex in Daegu.

In the future, BorgWarner DTC Co., Ltd. will be established to focus on electric motor R&D, and drive motor and drive system performance evaluation and R&D will be conducted here.

Daegu City plans to support motor company integration, motor R&D, advanced technology advancement, and commercialization by creating a motor-specialized complex in the second phase of the Daegu National Industrial Complex.

Gunther Rob, Vice President of BorgWarner PDS (Power Drive Systems) Business Unit, said, “Daegu is nurturing the electric vehicle motor industry and has a well-established auto parts production base and industry-academic cooperation system. We will do our best so that the new business of Borg Warner DTC can be successfully developed by investing in the company.”

Daegu Mayor Hong Jun-pyo said, “Electric motors are an essential part to foster local future industries such as electric vehicles, UAMs, and robots, and related markets are rapidly growing. I expect you to do your best.”
