14일 영덕군에 따르면 군은 옥계계곡과 팔각산 등의 지역 관광지와 연계해 향토 먹거리를 개발하기 위해 2021년 미나리재배단지 조성 지원사업을 추진해 미나리 재배 하우스 9동(3,149㎡)과 관정 개발, 저온저장고, 세척기 등을 재배 작목반에 지원했다.

이렇게 조성된 영덕 옥계미나리 재배단지는 지난해 성공적으로 시범 재배를 마쳐 지난 1일 첫 정식 수확을 시작으로 출하되고 있다.

현재 수확되는 옥계미나리는 봄 재배 작형으로 2,140㎡, 7동 규모의 내재해형 시설하우스에서 작년 9월경 파종해 올해 4월 중순까지 수확하게 되며 예상 생산량은 2톤으로 예상된다.

미나리는 특유의 해독작용뿐만 아니라 각종 성인병에도 효과가 있는 것으로 잘 알려져 있으며, 비타민이 풍부한 알칼리성 음식으로 장내 유익균을 증가시켜 면역력을 높이는 데 도움이 된다.

옥계미나리의 경우는 일조량이 많고 수질이 좋은 영덕 특유의 재배환경에서 재배돼 향이 진하고 아삭한 식감을 가지고 있어 상품 경쟁력이 뛰어나다.

김기동 농촌지원과장은 “올해 처음 출하하는 옥계미나리지만 뛰어난 상품성으로 지역주민들 사이에 관심이 많다”며, “앞으로 과학적인 재배 기술을 확립하고 추가적인 지원을 통해 영덕을 대표하는 특산물로 육성해 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.
