6일 더불어민주당 대구시당 김대중홀에서는 더불어민주당 대구시당과 진보당 대구시당, 새진보연합 대구시당이 기자회견을 통해 전국 최초의 지역단위 선거연합을 발표했다.

이들은 새진보연합이 수성구을 지역구에 후보를 내고 더불어민주당은 동구을 지역구를 진보당에 양보하는 것과 함께 선거운동에 나서는 데 합의했다.

이를 위해 더불어민주당 이승천 예비후보는 20여년 간 밭을 일궈온 대구 동구군위군지역구를 진보당 황순규 국회의원 예비후보에게 양보해 눈길을 끌었다.

이 예비후보는 “오랜 시간 활동해온 지역구를 양보하면서 저 스스로와 지지해준 주민들에 대한 미안한 마음이 컸다”며 “그러나 지역 구도를 타파하고 새로운 변화를 위해 양보하고자 한다”며 입장을 전했다.

진보당 황순규 예비후보는 “윤석열 정권 심판이라는 대의를 위해 큰 결단을 내려주신 이승천 후보님께 감사드린다”며 “남은 선거기간 열심히 활동하는 모습으로 보답하겠다”고 말했다.

이날 기자회견에 참석한 새진보연합 용혜인 대표 역시 “오랜 시간 다져온 지역구 출마를 포기한 이승천 후보님의 결단은 대구 지역뿐만 아니라 전국의 승리를 이루어내는 역사적인 결단”이라며 “모범적이고 헌신적인 이번 연합이 야권의 승리를 만들어낼 주춧돌이 될 것이다”라며 기대를 전했다.

지역 정가도 이승천 예비후보의 결단에 깊은 응원을 보냈다. 동구군위을 지역 정치권 관계자 A씨는 “(이승천 예비후보는) 우리 동네에서 민주당 당원으로 활동하며 참 고생 많았던 사람이다. 당을 떠나 그의 수고를 위로하고 싶다. 이번에 자신보다 지지율이 낮지만 젊고 괜찮은 후보에 자신을 희생하는 데 기꺼이 동참한 그에게 또 한번 위로를 전하면서 그의 남은 정치 인생에 응원을 보낸다. 그가 당을 위해 희생한 만큼, 이제 당이 그에게 응답을 하지 않겠느냐? 민주당이 그런 보은의 정치를 실행할 때 이곳 대구에서도 민주당의 주가가 올라갈 것”이라고 말했다.
