경상북도는 지난 1월 16일 축제심의위원회를 열고 도내 19개 시·군의 대표 축제를 대상으로 평가를 실시한 결과, 영천보현산별빛축제를 차별화된 콘텐츠 구성과 안정적인 축제 운영 역량을 갖춘 축제로 인정해 우수축제로 선정했다.

이번 선정으로 영천시는 2027년까지 연간 5,500만 원씩, 2년간 총 1억 1,000만 원의 도비 지원을 확보하게 됐으며, 경북을 대표하는 브랜드 축제로서의 위상을 이어가게 됐다.

영천보현산별빛축제는 국내 최대 규모의 천문 연구 시설인 보현산천문대와 보현산천문과학관을 중심으로 별 관측, 천문 체험, 전문가 강연 등 다양한 천문·과학 프로그램을 운영하는 체험형 축제다. 가족 단위 관광객과 청소년을 주요 대상으로 매년 별 관측에 최적기인 10월 보현산천문과학관 일원에서 개최되며, 청정 자연과 전통 문화가 어우러진 ‘별의 도시 영천’을 널리 알리고 있다.

지난해에는 ‘영천의 별빛 아래, 토성의 고리를 찾아’라는 슬로건 아래 축제가 열렸으며, 현장 방문객 3만 2천여 명과 온라인 참가자 36만 5천여 명이 참여해 큰 호응을 얻었다.

시 관계자는 “8년 연속 경상북도 우수축제 선정은 별빛축제를 사랑해 준 시민과 관광객, 그리고 축제 관계자들의 꾸준한 노력의 결과”라며 “앞으로도 영천만의 천문·과학 자원을 활용해 남녀노소 누구나 즐길 수 있는 축제로 지속 발전시켜 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.

한편 영천시는 이번 우수축제 선정을 계기로 올해 보현산별빛축제에서 야간 특화 체험 프로그램을 확대하고, 가족 친화형 콘텐츠와 최신 트렌드를 반영한 프로그램을 강화해 과학문화 중심 축제로서의 완성도를 더욱 높여나갈 계획이다.
