대구대학교(총장 박순진)는 중국 최초의 근대식 청각장애 교육 교재인 ‘계아초계(啓瘂初階)’ 원본을 최근 확인했다고 밝혔다. 해당 문헌은 1908년 중국에서 간행된 책으로, 중국 최초의 근대 농학교인 ‘계음학관(啓瘖學館)’ 설립자인 미국인 선교사 아네타 톰슨 밀스(Annetta Thompson Mills) 여사가 발간한 구화교육 교재다. 입 모양 관찰과 발성 기관 훈련을 통해 말을 습득하도록 하는 구화법 교육 내용을 담고 있다.

대구대는 지난 1월 16일 사범대학에서 열린 한국특수교육문제연구소 동계학술대회를 통해 ‘계아초계’ 원본을 처음 공개하고, 해당 문헌의 발굴 경위와 역사적·학술적 가치를 조명했다.

이번 발견은 문헌의 전래 과정에서도 의미가 크다. ‘계아초계’는 대구대 설립자인 이영식 목사의 차남 고(故) 이기수 선생이 미국 유학 시절 수집한 특수교육 전문 도서 가운데 하나로, 1966년 대한적십자사를 통해 대구대 도서관에 기증됐다. 이기수 선생은 1953년 특수교육을 공부하기 위해 미국으로 유학한 최초의 한국인으로, 헬렌 켈러가 후원한 장학재단 장학생이기도 했다. 그는 보스턴대, 갈로뎃대, 웨인주립대, 시라큐스대, 피츠버그대 등에서 수학하며 한국 특수교육 연구의 기틀을 다진 인물이다.

특히 이번 문헌의 존재를 처음 확인한 인물이 대구대 대학원에 재학 중인 중국인 유학생이라는 점도 눈길을 끈다. 중국 산둥성 더저우시 특수교육학교에서 미술강사로 근무했던 왕샤오루이(27) 씨는 대구대 교육학과 석사과정 재학 중 도서관에서 자료를 조사하다 우연히 ‘계아초계’를 발견했다. 그는 과거 중국에서 밀스 여사와 관련된 입체사진을 수집한 경험을 계기로 해당 교재의 존재를 알고 있었던 것으로 전해졌다.

대구대가 소장한 ‘계아초계’는 총 6권이 모두 보존된 완전한 초판본으로, 현재 중국 현지에서도 찾아보기 어려운 희귀본이다. 판권지와 관부 고시 등 공식 문건이 함께 수록돼 있으며, 그간 1907년으로 알려졌던 출판 시기가 1908년임이 이번 발견을 통해 확인돼 학술적 가치가 더욱 높아졌다.

이 문헌은 중국 최초 농학교 설립자인 밀스 여사와 한국 특수교육을 이끈 미국 선교사 로제타 셔우드 홀(Rosetta Sherwood Hall) 여사 간의 역사적 연관성을 규명할 수 있는 자료로, 한·중·미 3국 특수교육 교류사를 밝히는 데 중요한 단서를 제공한다는 평가다.

왕샤오루이 씨는 향후 대구대 대학원 특수교육학과 박사과정에 진학해 ‘계아초계’를 주제로 연구를 이어갈 계획이다. 그는 “이 문헌이 한·중 간 학술 및 민간 교류를 더욱 활성화하는 계기가 되길 기대한다”고 말했다.

권순우 대구대 한국특수교육문제연구소장은 “‘계아초계’는 중국 근대 농교육의 시작을 보여주는 국가적 사료이자 한국 농교육에도 큰 영향을 미친 자료”라며 “근대 동아시아 특수교육의 전파 경로를 보여주는 중요한 역사적 증거로서 향후 심층 연구가 필요하다”고 밝혔다.

Daegu University (President Park Soon-jin) recently announced the discovery of the original copy of "Gye-a-cho-gye (啓瘂初階)" (Ji-a-cho-gye), China's first modern textbook for deaf education. Published in China in 1908, the textbook was written by Annetta Thompson Mills, an American missionary and founder of "Gye-eum-hak-gwan (啓瘖學館), the first modern deaf school in China. It contains oral language instruction, which promotes speech acquisition through observation of mouth shapes and vocal organ training.

Daegu University unveiled the original copy of "Gye-a-cho-gye" for the first time at the Korea Institute for Special Education Research Winter Conference held at the College of Education on January 16th, highlighting its discovery and historical and academic value.

This discovery holds significant significance in the history of its transmission. "Gye-a-cho-gye" is one of the special education books collected by the late Lee Ki-su, the second son of Daegu University founder Rev. Lee Young-sik, while studying in the United States. It was donated to the Daegu University Library in 1966 through the Korean Red Cross. Lee Ki-su was the first Korean to study special education in the United States in 1953, and was also a recipient of a Helen Keller Foundation scholarship. He laid the foundation for special education research in Korea, studying at Boston University, Gallaudet University, Wayne State University, Syracuse University, and the University of Pittsburgh.

It's particularly noteworthy that the first person to confirm the existence of this document was a Chinese student studying at Daegu University's graduate school. Wang Xiaorui (27), who worked as an art instructor at a special education school in Dezhou, Shandong Province, China, stumbled upon "Ji'a Chujie" while researching materials in the library while pursuing a master's degree in education at Daegu University. He reportedly knew of the textbook's existence from his past experience collecting stereoscopic photographs related to Mrs. Mills in China.

The "Ji'a Chujie" held by Daegu University is a complete first edition, with all six volumes preserved. This rare edition is difficult to find even in China today. Official documents, such as the copyright notice and government notices, are included, and the publication date, previously believed to be 1907, has been confirmed in 1908 through this discovery, further enhancing its academic value.

This document is considered to provide crucial clues to the history of special education exchanges among Korea, China, and the United States, as it can shed light on the historical connection between Mrs. Mills, the founder of China's first deaf school, and Mrs. Rosetta Sherwood Hall, an American missionary who spearheaded special education in Korea.

Wang Xiaorui plans to pursue a doctoral degree in special education at Daegu University's Graduate School of Special Education and continue his research on "Gye-a-cho-gye." He stated, "I hope this document will serve as a catalyst for further academic and civilian exchanges between Korea and China."

Kwon Soon-woo, Director of the Korea Institute for Special Education at Daegu University, stated, "'Gye-a-cho-gye' is a national historical document that demonstrates the beginnings of modern deaf education in China and has had a significant impact on deaf education in Korea. It is important historical evidence showing the transmission path of special education in modern East Asia, and in-depth research is needed in the future."
