【브레이크뉴스 대구】진예솔 기자=지체 및 뇌병변 장애를 가진 대구대학교 유장군 학생이 9년간의 학업을 마치고 박사 학위를 받는다.

19일 대구대에 따르면 유장군 학생은 심한 뇌성마비로 신체적 움직임은 물론 일상 대화조차 어려운 중증 장애를 가지고 있다.

유장군 학생은 최성규 교수의 헌신으로 대구대에서 학사와 석사, 박사과정을 모두 마쳤다. 오는 21일 대구대 대학원 학위수여식에서 문학박사학위와 우수연구상, 총동상회장상을 받을 예정이다.

지도교수인 최성규 교수도 올해 2월 말 퇴임을 앞두고 있다. 최 교수는 콜라를 너무 좋아해 ‘콜라대장’이란 별명을 가진 유장군 학생 곁에서 콜라병 뚜껑을 따주던 스승이었다.

두 사람의 인연은 2016년부터 시작됐다. 유장군 학생은 심한 장애 뿐만 아니라 불우한 가정 환경으로 어려운 대학 생활을 했다. 정부 지원금으로 생활하던 그가 대학원 입학금이 없어 진학을 고민할 때 최 교수가 그 비용을 댔다.

유장군 학생은 학부 생활을 무사히 마친 것도, 대학원에서 더 열심히 공부할 수 있는 것도 최 교수의 가르침 덕분이라 생각했다. 그만큼 학업에 남다른 열의를 보였다.

학업에 대한 열정으로 유장군 학생은 박사과정 재학 기간 중 7편의 논문을 단독 또는 제1저자로 게재했다. 7편의 논문 중 2편은 국제학술지인 스코퍼스(SCOPUS) 등재지에 게재됐다.

그는 ▶지체장애학교 교사의 교수학습 방법 ▶장애인 교원의 교직입문에 관한 질적 연구 ▶초등학교 국어교과서 장애인인식교육 삽화 비교 분석 등 교육 분야에서 장애인의 활동과 역할에 관한 연구를 주로 수행했다.

최성규 교수와 함께 ‘장애인 교원의 교직입문 전과 후의 교직발달에 대한 질적연구’ 논문을 공동으로 집필해 한국지체·중복·건강장애교육학회 학술지에 게재하기도 했다.

이제 유장군 학생과 최성규 교수는 ‘마지막 졸업식’을 맞는다. 유장군 학생은 “박사과정을 마치고 교수님의 조언대로 교원 임용시험을 준비할 예정”이라며 “경제적으로 자립한 후 미국 유학을 다녀와 최성규 교수님과 같은 교수가 되는 것이 목표”라고 밝혔다.

최 교수는 대학 강단을 떠나 청각장애인의 교육 환경 개선을 위한 실천가로 활동할 예정이다.

박순진 총장은 “많은 교사와 교수들은 각박해진 교육 현장에서 묵묵히 학생들을 위한 헌신과 사랑을 실천하고 있다”며 “퇴임하는 최성규 교수와 그를 부모처럼 따른 유장군 학생이 그 본보기일 것이다.  앞으로 교육 현장이 더 따뜻한 사제지간의 정으로 물들길 바란다”고 말했다.

The relationship between the two began in 2016. Yu Jang-gun had a difficult college life due to his severe disability as well as his unfortunate family background. When he was living on government subsidies and was considering going to graduate school because he didn’t have enough money to pay for his tuition, Professor Choi paid for it.

Student Yoo Jang-gun thought that he was able to successfully complete his undergraduate studies and study harder in graduate school thanks to Professor Choi’s teachings. He showed extraordinary enthusiasm for his studies.

With his passion for his studies, student Yoo Jang-gun published seven papers as the sole author or first author during his doctoral studies. Two of the seven papers were published in international academic journals such as SCOPUS.

He mainly conducted research on the activities and roles of people with disabilities in the field of education, such as ▶ teaching and learning methods of teachers at schools for the physically disabled ▶ qualitative research on the entry into the teaching profession of teachers with disabilities ▶ comparative analysis of illustrations in elementary school Korean language textbooks for disability awareness education.

He also co-wrote a paper with Professor Choi Seong-gyu titled ‘A qualitative study on the development of teachers with disabilities before and after their entry into the teaching profession’ and published it in the journal of the Korean Society for Physical, Multiple, and Health Education.

Now, Jang-Gun Yoo and Professor Sung-Gyu Choi are having their ‘last graduation ceremony.’ Jang-Gun Yoo said, “After completing my doctoral course, I plan to prepare for the teacher certification exam as the professor advised me,” and “After becoming financially independent, I plan to study abroad in the United States and become a professor like Professor Sung-Gyu Choi.”

Professor Choi plans to leave the university podium and work as a practitioner to improve the educational environment for the hearing impaired.

President Soon-Jin Park said, “Many teachers and professors are silently practicing devotion and love for their students in the harsh educational environment,” and “Professor Sung-Gyu Choi, who is retiring, and Jang-Gun Yoo, who followed him like a parent, are examples of this. I hope that the educational field will be filled with warmer teacher-student relationships in the future.”
