시는 기후 영향을 상대적으로 적게 받는 실내 체육시설을 활용하고, 숙박·음식점 등 지역 인프라와 연계한 전지훈련 운영으로 선수단의 장기 체류를 유도해 지역 상권 전반에 활력을 불어넣고 있다.

먼저 지난 11일부터 23일까지 13일간 서울 강서구 마곡리틀야구단 선수단 17명이 영천리틀야구단과 함께 동계 전지훈련을 실시하며 지역에 머물렀다.

이어 27일부터 2월 2일까지 7일간 ‘제3회 영천스타배 동계스토브리그 전국 중·고 배구대회’가 열린다. 이번 대회는 전지훈련을 겸해 개최되며, 전국 남녀 중·고 배구팀 32개 팀, 500여 명의 선수단이 참가해 풀리그 방식으로 경기를 치른다. 선수단은 대회 기간 동안 지역에 체류하며 훈련과 경기를 병행할 예정이다.

배구대회 종료 직후인 2월 3일부터는 전국 유도 선수단의 전지훈련이 이어진다. 오는 2월 13일까지 약 2주간 전국 각지에서 모인 1,000여 명의 유도 선수단이 영천을 찾아 집중 훈련에 돌입하며, 지역 스포츠 활성화와 함께 지역경제에도 긍정적인 효과가 기대된다.

영천시는 전지훈련팀 유치를 위해 최소 30인 이상, 3일 이상 지역에 체류하는 관외팀을 대상으로 팀당 최대 150만 원의 훈련경비를 지원하고 있다. 또한 체육관 난방 지원, 시설 사용료 감면, 훈련용품·생수·간식 제공 등 전반적인 지원을 통해 선수들이 훈련에만 전념할 수 있는 환경을 조성하고 있다.

지난해에는 유도, 육상, 배구, 세팍타크로, 축구, 검도 등 6개 종목 전지훈련팀을 유치해 참가 인원 1,100여 명, 연인원 5,700여 명이 지역에 체류했다. 이에 따른 직접 경제효과는 약 4억 원으로, 지원금 대비 3배 이상의 효과를 거두며 전지훈련 유치 사업의 성과를 입증했다.

체육시설 이용료 감면과 전지훈련 경비 지원에 대한 관심이 이어지면서 체육회와 종목단체의 협력을 바탕으로 올해 상반기에만 연인원 약 1만여 명 규모의 전지훈련이 영천에서 진행될 예정이다.

시 관계자는 “영천은 우수한 실내 체육시설과 숙박·음식점 등 생활 인프라를 갖춘 동계 전지훈련 최적지”라며 “앞으로도 선수들이 최상의 환경에서 훈련해 좋은 성과를 낼 수 있도록 지원을 아끼지 않겠다”고 말했다.

한편 영천시는 전지훈련팀 유치 확대와 전국 단위 대규모 체육대회 개최를 통해 지속적인 지역경제 활성화에 힘쓸 방침이다.
