김상호 총장은 지난해 7월 23일 학생·직원·교수가 참여하는 직선제 위탁 선거에서 △DX·AX 침습형 교육 혁신 프로그램 구축 △국가전략과 연계한 대경권 국립대학 시스템 구축 및 캠퍼스 특성화 △열린 가치를 창출하는 지·산·학 협력체계 구축 △구성원 중심의 민주적 대학 운영 등을 핵심 공약으로 내세워 1순위 총장임용후보자로 선정됐다. 이후 교육부 제청과 국무회의(2026년 1월 27일) 심의, 대통령 재가를 거쳐 최종 임명됐다.

서울 출신인 김 총장은 서라벌고와 성균관대학교 산업공학과를 졸업하고, 포항공과대학교에서 산업공학 전공으로 공학 석·박사 학위를 취득했다. 1996년 국립금오공과대학교에 부임한 이후 취업지원본부장, BK21+사업단장, 대학평의원회의장(교수회장) 등 주요 보직을 두루 역임했다.

대외적으로는 LG전자 디스플레이연구소 자문교수(2000년 5월~2006년 4월), 전국국공립대학교수회연합회 상임회장(2022년 3월~2023년 2월), (사)대한인간공학회 회장(2024년 1월~2025년 12월) 등을 맡아 학계와 산업계를 잇는 활동을 펼쳐왔다.

김상호 총장은 취임 소감을 통해 “소통과 공감, 통합의 리더십을 바탕으로 대학의 집단 지성과 혁신 역량을 결집해 새로운 성장의 DNA를 발굴하겠다”며 “국립금오공과대학교가 대경권 통합 국립대학 시스템의 중추로서 지역 성장을 견인하는 공공 앵커 교육기관으로 자리매김하도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 밝혔다.

Kim Sang-ho (59), a professor in the Department of Industrial and Big Data Engineering, was inaugurated as the 9th president of Kumoh National Institute of Technology on January 30th. His term will be four years, from January 30, 2026, to January 29, 2030.

President Kim Sang-ho was selected as the top candidate for the presidency in a direct election with participation from students, staff, and faculty on July 23rd of last year. His key pledges included establishing a DX/AX invasive educational innovation program, establishing a national university system in the Greater Seoul area aligned with national strategies and specializing campuses, establishing a collaborative system between industry, academia, and the public to create open value, and operating a democratic university centered on its members. His appointment was finalized following a recommendation from the Ministry of Education, deliberation at the Cabinet meeting (January 27, 2026), and presidential approval.

President Kim, a native of Seoul, graduated from Seorabeol High School and Sungkyunkwan University's Department of Industrial Engineering. He also earned his master's and doctorate degrees in industrial engineering from Pohang University of Science and Technology. Since joining Kumoh National Institute of Technology in 1996, he has held various key positions, including Director of the Career Support Center, Director of the BK21+ Project, and Chairman of the University Council (Faculty Council).

Externally, he has served as an Advisory Professor at the LG Electronics Display Research Institute (May 2000–April 2006), Standing Chairman of the Korean Association of Professors' Associations (March 2022–February 2023), and President of the Ergonomics Society of Korea (January 2024–December 2025), bridging the gap between academia and industry.

In his inaugural speech, President Kim Sang-ho said, “Based on leadership of communication, empathy, and integration, I will gather the university’s collective intelligence and innovative capabilities to discover new DNA for growth,” and “I will do my best to ensure that Kumoh National Institute of Technology establishes itself as a public anchor educational institution that drives regional growth as the backbone of the integrated national university system in the Daegu-Gyeonggi area.”
