구미시에 따르면 총 연장 39km에 달하는 낙동강이 구미 도심을 지나간다. 어느 곳에서나 접근성이 좋아 관광 자원화의 필요성과 조성이 쉽다는 의미다. 

구미시는 코로나 19 시기에 시민들에게 가장 많은 위로를 제공한 낙동강체육공원(지산지구)에 구미캠핑장을 추가로 조성하고, 낙동강 강바람길과 축구장, 야구장, 게이트볼장 등을 재정비하거나 추가로 조성할 방침이다.

이밖에 공원 둔치 일원에 꽃길을 조성하고, 공중화장실도 대대적으로 개선한다. 

낙동강 수상 레포츠 체험센터가 위치한 동락지구에는 낙동강 테마공간과 공중화장실 개선사업 등에 27억원을 반영한다. 이곳에는 카누, 카약, 패들보드, 윈드서핑, 딩기요트 등 다양한 수상레포츠를 체험할 수 있는 낙동강 수상 레포츠 체험센터를 조성한다.

선산, 옥성, 비산지역 낙동강 둔치 일원에는 낙동강 비산나룻길이, 옥성면에는 파크골프장이, 기존의 선산파크골프장은 편의시설이 확충되어 시민들을 만나게 된다.

이 밖에도 낙동강체육공원에 여름철 물놀이장 운영으로 호응이 좋았던 사업은 내년에도 지속된다. 여기에 더해 겨울철에도 가족단위로 여가를 즐길 수 있도록 눈썰매장을 운영하는 계획도 추진한다고 밝혔다.

이같은 계획은 김장호 구미시장이 지난 지방선거 당시 공약으로 구미시는 공약(公約)이 공약(空約)이 되지 않도록 2023년도 예산안에 공약 실천 사업을 대폭 반영했다고 거듭 밝혔다.
