Daegu City, “Infectious disease prevention rules must be observed due to the heat and rainy season”

As the risk of water-borne and food-borne infectious diseases increases in the summer, Daegu City urged citizens to follow infectious disease prevention rules such as washing hands and consuming safe food and water.

According to Daegu City on the 2nd, due to climate change, early heat waves have been rampant, with the highest daytime temperature in Daegu reaching 31 degrees since April 26th, and with the rainy season starting in July, bacterial growth is occurring due to the effects of high temperature and humidity. There are concerns about the spread of water-borne and food-borne infectious diseases.

As a result of specimen surveillance for intestinal infections, the incidence of bacterial intestinal infections (11 types) began to increase from the end of May when the weather became warmer, and the number of patients has been high in the 200-250 range for three consecutive weeks.

This is believed to have been influenced by sporadic outbreaks of norovirus and an increase in the number of patients with salmonella and campylobacter, which are particularly prevalent in the summer.

Salmonella can be mainly infected with contaminated meat, raw chicken, and egg shells, and symptoms such as diarrhea and fever appear after an incubation period of 6 to 72 hours upon infection.

The main cause of Campylobacter bacteria is consumption of insufficiently cooked chicken, pork, or contaminated raw milk, and symptoms appear after an incubation period of 2 to 7 days (10 days) after infection. Fever and malaise appear first 1 to 2 days before diarrhea. You can.

Kim Shin-woo, head of the Daegu City Infectious Disease Control Support Team, said, “If these infectious disease symptoms appear, provide sufficient fluids and adjust food intake to prevent dehydration. “If dehydration is severe or electrolyte imbalance occurs, fluid treatment may be considered, and if symptoms such as high fever, bloody stool, or severe diarrhea are severe, you should see a hospital and receive antibiotic treatment,” he said.

Daegu City Health and Welfare Director Eui-gwan Jeong said, “To prevent the occurrence of water-borne and food-borne infectious diseases, please follow the infectious disease prevention rules, such as consuming safe water and food through proper hand washing and thorough food management.”

Daegu City has operated an epidemiological investigation team (192 people in 10 teams) consisting of epidemiological investigators, medical personnel, and inspection personnel since last May to take prompt action in the event of a cluster of diarrhea patients and water-borne or food-borne infectious diseases. We maintain a 24-hour work system and are making every effort to respond to infectious diseases.Daegu City, “Infectious disease prevention rules must be observed due to the heat and rainy season”
