【브레이크뉴스 대구】진예솔 기자=대구 남구가 미육군대구기지와 협력해 운영하는 체험형 영어교육 프로그램 ‘글로벌 앞산 캠프’가 4일 130기 개강식을 열고 일정에 들어갔다.

남구청에 따르면 이번 130기에는 대구중학교 학생 22명이 참여했다. 올해는 초·중학교 5개교 학생 127명이 5개 기수로 나눠 캠프를 경험할 예정이다.

‘글로벌 앞산 캠프’는 학생들이 미군, 카투사와의 실질적인 교류를 통해 영어 소통 능력을 키울 수 있도록 마련된 프로그램이다. 참가자들은 미군 부대 내에서 영어 회화 연습과 문화 체험, 협동 미션 등에 참여하게 된다. 개강식에서는 자기소개와 팀 대항 볼링 게임 등 다양한 체험 활동도 진행됐다. 캠프에는 루크 김 중대장을 비롯한 미군과 카투사가 영어 교류 파트너 및 멘토로 함께한다.

이 프로그램은 2007년 시작돼 올해로 130기를 맞았다. 지금까지 초·중학교 124개교에서 3,140명의 학생이 수료했다. 지역 내 미군 부대라는 특수 자원을 교육 현장에 적극 활용한 사례로 꼽힌다. 남구는 해당 프로그램이 학생들의 영어 심리적 장벽을 낮추고, 외국 문화 이해와 글로벌 감수성 함양에 기여하고 있다고 밝혔다.

‘글로벌 앞산 캠프’는 이 같은 성과를 인정받아 2025년 전국 기초단체장 매니페스토 우수사례(공동체 분야) 우수상과 지방자치 혁신대상 교육혁신 부문 수상 사례로 선정됐다.

조재구 남구청장은 “글로벌 앞산 캠프는 남구만의 지역 환경을 교육적 기회로 전환한 대표 사업”이라며 “학생들이 영어 자신감을 키우고 세계와 소통할 수 있기를 바란다”고 말했다.

The "Global Apsan Camp," an experiential English education program run by the Nam-gu District Office in Daegu in collaboration with the US Army Daegu Garrison, held its 130th opening ceremony on the 4th and kicked off its program.

According to the Nam-gu District Office, 22 students from Daegu Middle School participated in the 130th camp. This year, 127 students from five elementary and middle schools will participate in the camp, divided into five groups.

The "Global Apsan Camp" is designed to help students develop their English communication skills through practical interactions with US soldiers and KATUSA soldiers. Participants will practice English conversation, experience culture, and participate in collaborative missions within the US military base. The opening ceremony also featured various hands-on activities, such as self-introductions and team bowling. US soldiers and KATUSA soldiers, including Company Commander Luke Kim, will participate as English exchange partners and mentors during the camp.

The program, which began in 2007, celebrates its 130th anniversary this year. To date, 3,140 students from 124 elementary and middle schools have completed the program. It is considered a prime example of actively utilizing the unique resources of the local US military base in education. Nam-gu District Office stated that the program is helping students overcome their psychological barriers to learning English and fostering an understanding of foreign cultures and a global sensibility.

In recognition of these achievements, the "Global Apsan Camp" was selected as the recipient of the 2025 National Local Government Mayor's Manifesto Best Practice (Community Category) and the Local Government Innovation Award in the Education Innovation category.

Nam-gu District Mayor Cho Jae-gu stated, "The Global Apsan Camp is a representative project that has transformed Nam-gu's unique local environment into an educational opportunity. I hope it will help students build their English confidence and enable them to connect with the world."
