【브레이크뉴스 대구】진예솔 기자=음주운전 방조 혐의를 받고 있는 정재목 대구시 남구의회 부의장에 대해 남구의회 윤리특별위원회가 7일 '제명' 징계를 의결했다. 정 의원은 지난 4월 지인의 음주운전을 방조한 혐의로 재판에 넘겨진 상태다.

남구의회는 이날 오후 3시 윤리특위를 열고, 외부 자문위원회가 권고한 ‘제명’ 결정을 받아들여 해당 징계안을 의결했다. 징계가 확정되기 위해선 본회의에서 재적의원 3분의 2 이상, 즉 정 의원을 제외한 7명 중 6명의 동의가 필요하다.

앞서 경찰은 지난 4월 26일 오후 9시 50분쯤 대구 달서구 도로에서 정 의원이 A씨(50대·여)의 음주운전을 방조한 혐의를 포착해 입건했고, 사건은 지난달 11일 검찰에 송치됐다. 정 의원은 당시 술을 마신 상태에서 일정 구간을 직접 운전한 뒤, A씨에게 운전을 맡긴 것으로 전해졌다. 음주 수치는 훈방 기준인 0.03% 미만으로, 정 의원에게는 음주운전 방조 혐의만 적용됐다.

한편, 윤리특위 개최 전 대구시민단체연대회의 등 9개 단체는 남구의회 앞에서 기자회견을 열고 정 의원의 제명을 촉구했다. 이들은 “정 의원은 사회적으로 용납될 수 없는 범죄를 저질렀고, 이를 은폐하려 했다”며 “윤리심사자문위의 권고대로 즉각 제명해야 한다”고 주장했다.

이와 달리 주민 378명은 정 의원에 대한 선처를 요청하는 의견서를 제출한 것으로 알려졌다.

정 의원은 현재 국민의힘을 탈당한 상태지만, 구의원직은 유지하고 있다. 시민단체는 이에 대해 “선출직 공직자로서 자격에 의문이 든다”고 비판했다.

징계안은 향후 열릴 본회의에서 최종 결정될 예정이다.

Jeong was only charged with aiding and abetting drunk driving.

Meanwhile, before the ethics committee was held, nine groups including the Daegu Citizens’ Solidarity Conference held a press conference in front of the Nam-gu Council and called for Rep. Jeong’s expulsion. They claimed, “Rep. Jeong committed a socially unacceptable crime and attempted to cover it up,” and “He should be expelled immediately as recommended by the ethics review advisory committee.”

In contrast, 378 residents are known to have submitted a petition requesting leniency for Rep. Jeong.

Rep. Jeong has currently left the People’s Power Party, but is still holding his seat as a district council member. Civic groups criticized this, saying, “It raises questions about his qualifications as an elected public official.”

The disciplinary action will be finalized at the upcoming plenary session.
