강 교육감은 5월 11일 오전 10시 30분 대구시교육청에서 기자회견을 열고 6.1 지방선거 대구시교육감 선거 출마를 선언했다,

강 교육감은 “지난 4년 동안 대구교육가족과 함께 일궈낸 성과와 축적한 경험을 바탕으로  대구교육을 한 단계 더 도약시키고‘미래로 한 걸음 더’ 성큼 나아가고자 한다”며 ‘아이중심, 교실중심, 세상을 바꾸는 대구교육’을 만들겠다는 포부를 밝혔다.

이어 그는 IB프로그램 도입을 주요 성과로 내세우며 “이번 교육감 선거에서 서울 경기 광주 충남 등의 지역에서도 교육감 후보들이 앞다퉈 ib 프로그램 도입을 공약으로 내걸고 있다.”며 “이는 대구 교육이 대한민국 교육을 선도해 가고 있다는 것을 증명해 주는 것”이라고 강조했다.

강 교육감은 “선생님들을 만날 때마다 저는 대구 시민께 한 약속을 한 번도 잊은 적이 없다.”며 “그런 노력으로 전국 교육감 공약 이행평가에서 3년 연속 최고 등급을 받았고 공약이행 재정 집행률 100%를 달성해 시민들과의 약속을 지켰다.”고 말했다.
