【브레이크뉴스 안동】이성현 기자=한국국학진흥원(원장 정종섭, 이하 국학진흥원)은 지난해부터 문화체육관광부 지원으로 한국 근대사의 주역인 중장년 세대와 함께 근대기록자료를 조사․수집하고 있다고 23일 밝혔다.

이는 우리 역사의 중요한 한 축을 이루는 근대에 생산된 자료의 멸실과 훼손을 방치할 수 없다는 시대적 요구에 따른 것이다.

 650명 조사원과 함께하는 근대기록자료 조사수집

2021년 실버일자리 창출사업의 일환으로 500명의 조사원을 선발하여 10만 건에 달하는 자료를 수집하였으며, 올해는 650명으로 인원을 늘려 20만 건 수집을 목표로 하고 있다.

1910년 일제 강점기 이후 1979년까지 민간이 소장하고 있는 기록자료가 그 대상인데, 안타깝게도 이미 많은 자료가 사망이나 이사 혹은 중요하지 않다는 개인적인 판단 등의 이유로 폐기된 상태이다.

이에 조사원들은 발 빠르게 주변의 가까운 이들을 설득하고 지역 유지와 어르신들을 찾아다니며 전국 각지에서 민간이 가지고 있는 원본 자료를 디지털 형태로 조사․수집하고 있다.

그 결과 우리 역사 최대의 비극이고 아픔인 일제 강점기와 한국전쟁, 월남 파병 등 근대의 험한 파고를 견디며 살아낸 사람들의 희로애락이 담긴 기록자료가 국학진흥원으로 속속 모여들고 있으며, 이를 통해 낡고 오랜 사진들이 차곡차곡 쌓여 ‘민초실록民草實錄’으로 되살아날 채비를 하고 있다. 

근대기록자료 속 한국전쟁

한국국학진흥원은 근대자료를 정리하는 중에 한국전쟁과 관련된 자료들을 발굴하였다. 그동안 한국전쟁에 대한 이해는 전쟁의 참상과 관련된 내용들이 주로 소개되고 그 시절의 일상은 긴 공백으로 남아있었다.

그러나 전쟁 중에도 사랑은 꽃피었고, 어느 날의 일상은 즐겁기도 한 모습들이 운동회, 졸업식, 결혼식, 여행, 수료식 등의 사진으로 민간에 남아있었다.

올해로 72주년을 맞은 한국전쟁은 3년 동안 이어져 전국을 폐허로 만들고, 국민들의 삶을 생존이 불투명해질 정도로 피폐화시켰다. 현재 대한민국은 전 세계 유일의 분단국가이며, 전쟁의 후유증은 현재 진행형이다.

남북으로, 동서로 대립하며 서로를 상처 내는 행태가 지금까지도 없어지지 않은 채 남북의 갈등은 동서로 확대되고, 동서의 갈등은 남북의 갈등을 고착시키는 악순환의 고리가 더욱 단단하게 조여지고 있는 것이 현실이다. 하지만 근대기록자료 속 다양한 일상의 모습들은 우리가 같은 고민을 하고 함께 웃고 살아가는 이웃이고 한민족임을 일깨운다.

사진들은 내년부터 국학진흥원 근대기록문화아카이브를 통해 공개될 예정으로, 누구든 어디에서나 우리의 근대사에 쉽고 편리하게 시각적으로 접근할 수 있는 길이 열리게 된다.

근대기록자료를 통한 한국근대사의 복원

근대기록자료에 대한 전국적인 조사·수집이 아직은 초기 단계라 다양하지는 않지만 조사원들의 적극적인 활동과 소장자들의 관심으로 인해 사장될 위험에 놓인 많은 자료들이 그 모습을 드러낼 것이며, 일제 강점기 이후 단절된 근현대 민간의 모습들을 복원할 수 있을 것이라 기대한다.

한국국학진흥원은 전근대자료와 함께 근대자료를 정리하면서 시사성 있고 역사 인식을 높일 수 있는 기획을 통해 우리 역사에 대한 사회적 관심을 환기시키고, ‘근대의 기억’ 컬렉션을 통해 대한민국 근대의 조각들을 종횡으로 촘촘하게 채우는 계획을 하고 있다. 이러한 작업이 국내뿐만 아니라 국외의 관심도 이끌어 청산되지 못한 국제관계의 문제점들을 해결하는 데 기여할 수 있으리라 생각한다.

As a result, documentary materials containing the joys and sorrows of those who survived the harsh waves of modern times such as the Japanese colonial period, the Korean War, and the dispatch of troops to Vietnam, the greatest tragedy and pain in our history, are being gathered one after another to the National Academy of Education Promotion, and through this, old and old photos are being collected one after another. They are preparing to be revived as the 'Mincho Annals of People'.

Korean War in Modern Archives

The Korean Studies Promotion Agency discovered materials related to the Korean War while organizing modern materials. In the meantime, the understanding of the Korean War was mainly introduced with contents related to the horrors of the war, and the daily life of that time remained a long blank.

However, even during the war, love blossomed, and pictures of everyday life that were enjoyable were left in the private sector as photos of sports day, graduation ceremony, wedding ceremony, travel, graduation ceremony, etc.

Restoration of Korean modern history through modern archival materials

Although the nationwide investigation and collection of modern archival materials is still in its infancy, it is not diverse, but due to the active activities of investigators and the interest of collectors, many materials in danger of being destroyed will be revealed. I hope to be able to restore their appearance.

The National Institute of Korean Studies aroused social interest in our history through a project that can raise current awareness and awareness of history while organizing modern materials along with pre-modern materials. I have a plan to fill. I believe that this work will draw attention from not only domestic but also foreign countries and contribute to resolving the problems of unresolved international relations.
