2019년부터 시작된 코로나19는 전세계를 휩쓸면서 인류를 위협하고 있다. 현재는 철저한 위생관리와 방역수칙 등으로 소강상태에 접어들었지만 생활 전반에 많은 변화를 가져왔다. 질병은 전쟁과 더불어 사람들의 삶을 부정적으로 바꾸는 가장 중요한 문제였다. 그러므로 동서양을 막론하고 질병에 관한 관심이 지대했다. 그래서 전문적으로 의업에 종사하는 사람들뿐만 아니라 일반 사람들도 질병을 치료하려는 방안을 여러모로 모색해 왔다.

유의儒醫의 탄생

조선의 유학자들은 다른 사람들의 아픔을 나의 아픔으로 알고 사람들을 치료하는 것을 중요한 임무로 삼았다. 사람들의 아픔은 여러 종류가 있고 그중 가장 밖으로 드러난 것이 질병이었다. 그래서 조선의 유학자들은 세상을 고치는 것과 사람의 질병을 고치는 것이 다른 길이라고 생각하지 않았다. 선비의사, 유의儒醫는 그렇게 탄생했다.

유의는 의술로 영리활동을 하는 사람은 아니었다. 이들은 다른 사람들의 아픔을 공감하고 치유하기 위해 의서를 편찬하고 의술을 익혔다. 그래서 좀 더 많은 사람에게 의술을 베푸는 방안을 고민했다.

조선시대 국가에서 주관하는 의서의 편찬에는 '반드시'라고 해도 좋을 만큼 의술에 밝은 유학자들이 참여하는 것이 일반적이었다. 유학자들이 의학에 관심을 두기 시작하면서 조선의 의학은 엄청난 성장을 보였다. 『향약집성방』 등은 유학자들이 편찬에 참여한 대표적인 의학서들이다. 유학자들은 스스로 의학서 집필에 나서기도 하였다. 유학자들은 세상의 질병을 고칠 의무가 있다고 깊게 인식하고 있었기 때문에 의학서를 편찬하여, 다른 사람들도 이 책을 보고 사람들의 질병을 치료하기를 바랐던 것이다. 나아가 유학자들은 의술의 혜택을 받기 힘들었던 지방에 의원을 세워 백성을 치료하는 데도 앞장섰다.

이러한 활동들은 선비들이 세상을 보는 방법이기도 했다. 이들은 세상의 아픔을 나의 아픔으로 알고, 질병을 다스릴 때는 환자의 마음을 살펴 위로하면서 함께 극복하고자 하였다.

유의의 이러한 마음가짐은 엄청난 아픔을 겪고 있는 오늘날 우리에게 시사하는 바가 크다. 유의들은 전염병의 경우 개인의 문제가 아닌 공동체 전체가 같이 앓는 것으로 생각하고 함께 해결하고자 하였다.

의학 관련 소장자료 총망라

이번 전시에서는 의학 관련 소장자료를 전시와 도록을 통해 다양하게 살펴볼 수 있다. 역병의 상황을 겪으며 당시의 상황을 기록해 둔 일기와 국가 차원에서 백성들을 구제하기 위해 편찬한 의학서, 류성룡이 저술한『침경요결』, 안동지방의 유의였던 임정한이 쓴 ‘존양요결’등이 그것이다.

또한 조선에서 가장 오래된 공립지방 의원인 영주의 제민루濟民樓와 당시 선비의사로서 상당히 명성이 있었던 이석간李碩幹에 관한 유물을 전시한다.

이번 전시를 통해 조선시대 선비의사들이 세상과 질병에 대한 태도를 되돌아보고, 모두가 같이 난국을 극복해 나가는 방법을 모색하였으면 한다. 이번 전시는 2022년 경북문화관광콘텐츠 활용전시의 두 번째 장소인 영주소수박물관에서 8월 31일까지 계속된다.

Therefore, Korean Confucians did not think that healing the world was different from curing people's diseases. This is how the seonbi doctor, Yu 儒醫, was born.

The development of medicine and scholars in the Joseon Dynasty

In the Joseon Dynasty, it was common for Confucian scholars who were well versed in medicine to participate in the compilation of medical books hosted by the state. As Confucian scholars began to take an interest in medicine, Korean medicine showed tremendous growth. 『Hyangyakjipseongbang』 are representative medical books that Confucian scholars participated in compiling. Confucian scholars even started writing medical books on their own. Confucian scholars were deeply aware that they had a duty to cure the diseases of the world, so they compiled a medical book and hoped that other people would also read it and cure people's diseases. Furthermore, Confucian scholars took the lead in treating the people by establishing clinics in regions where it was difficult to receive medical benefits.

The pain of the people of the world is my pain

 These activities were also a way for scholars to see the world. They knew the pain of the world as their own pain, and when dealing with diseases, they tried to overcome them together by examining the hearts of the patients and comforting them.

This attitude of Yu Yui has great implications for us today, who are going through great pain. In the case of an infectious disease, they tried to solve it together, thinking that the whole community suffers from it, not as an individual problem.

In this exhibition, you can look at various medical-related materials through exhibitions and catalogs. These include a diary that recorded the situation at the time of the plague, a medical book compiled to relieve the people at the national level, 『Chimkyung Yogyeol』 written by Ryu Seong-ryong, and 'Respectful Yogyeol' written by Im Jeong-han, a scholar from the Andong region. will be.

Also on display are relics of Jemin-ru of Yeongju, the oldest public provincial legislator in Joseon, and Lee Seok-gan, who was quite famous as a scholar at the time.

Through this exhibition, I hope that the scholars of the Joseon Dynasty can look back on their attitudes toward the world and diseases, and find ways for all to overcome difficulties together.
