【브레이크뉴스 안동】이성현 기자=한국국학진흥원(원장 정종섭)은 봉화군(군수 박현국)과 함께 8월 21일 오후 2시에 봉화군청소년센터 대강당에서‘괴담 배상열의 학문과 사상’이라는 주제로 학술대회를 개최한다고 밝혔다.

이번 학술대회는 봉화가 낳은 천재 학자 괴담 배상열의 천문과 지리, 역학과 산학에 대한 총체적인 연구가 이루어질 전망이다.

괴담槐潭 배상열裵相說(1759~1789)은 봉화에서 태어나, 15세 전후에 독학으로 깨우쳐 천문과 지리, 역학과 산학에 뛰어났고, 23세 때 대산 이상정의 문하에 나아가 배운 뒤로는 성리학에도 조예가 깊었다.

30세의 나이로 요절했지만, ‘도학육도道學六圖’, ‘서계쇄록書計鎖錄’, ‘사서의의四書疑義’, ‘성리찬요性理纂要’, ‘사서찬요四書纂要’, ‘계몽도해啓蒙圖解’, ‘심경품목心經稟目’, ‘을수제요乙數提要’ 등 많은 저술을 남겼다.

특히 그는 16세에 천문을 관측하는 혼천의渾天儀[선기옥형]를 만든 이후, 21세와 27세에 다시 제작하고 수정하는 등 천문 분야에서 놀라운 천재적 역량을 발휘하였다. 28세 때 편찬한 ‘서계쇄록’하편은 수론數論에서 시작하여 각종 산법算法에 이르기까지 두루 아우른 본격적인 산서算書로, 배상열의 수리 사상이 전면적으로 드러나 있다.

앞선 시기에 나온 최석정의‘구수략九數略’을 기본으로 하면서도 구체적인 산법과 운용의 측면에서 형이상학적 색채를 철저히 탈피하였다는 점에서, 18세기 말 조선 지식인들의 변화된 수리 사상의 실체를 확인할 수 있다.

이번 학술대회는 관련 분야의 전문 연구자 5명이 참석하여 괴담 배상열의 생애와 교유관계는 물론, 성리학과 역학, 천문 및 수리 사상에 대해 총체적으로 검토할 예정이다.

먼저 박권수 교수(충북대)는 배상열의 생애와 교유관계를 구체적으로 분석하고, 그의 상수학적 우주론 연구를 전체적으로 소개한다.

이영호 교수(성균관대)는 배상열이 세상을 떠나기 직전에 완성한 ‘도학육도’를 통해 그의 생애 후반기에 학문의 주축이었던 주자학적 사유를 고찰한다. 엄연석 소장(한림대 태동고전연구소)은 배상열의 역학과 성리학을 아우르는 도상학이 조선 후기 역학과 성리학에서 지니는 특징과 지위를 규명한다.

김상혁 박사(한국천문연구원)는 조선의 혼천의 제작 역사를 개략적으로 살피고, 그 가운데 적도환赤道環에 28수의 별자리를 그려 넣은 배상열의 혼천의만이 지닌 특징을 밝힌다. 마지막으로 강민정 연구원(한국고전번역원)은 18세기 초 최석정의 ‘구수략’과 비교 분석하여 ‘서계쇄록’의 수리 사상이 지닌 특징을 살펴본다.

18세기 영남학파 지식인들은 대체로 경세적·실용적인 학문보다는 형이상학적인 성리학과 번쇄한 예학에 치중하는 경향이 있었다. 이러한 시대적 상황 속에서 배상열이 추구한 학문은 18세기 사상사적 측면에서 뿐만 아니라 영남학파 학문의 심화와 외연 확대에 매우 중요한 의미를 지닌다고 할 수 있다.

The National Institute of Korean Studies to Hold an Academic Conference on ‘The Academics and Thoughts of Bae Sang-yeol of Goedam’

The National Institute of Korean Studies (Director Jeong Jong-seop) and Bonghwa County (Governor Park Hyeon-guk) announced that they will hold an academic conference on the topic of ‘The Academics and Thoughts of Bae Sang-yeol of Goedam’ at 2:00 PM on August 21st at the Bonghwa County Youth Center Main Hall.

This academic conference is expected to conduct comprehensive research on the astronomy, geography, chronology, and academia of Bae Sang-yeol of Goedam, a genius scholar born in Bonghwa.

Bae Sang-yeol of Goedam (1759-1789) was born in Bonghwa, and became an expert in astronomy, geography, academia, and academia after studying on his own around the age of 15. He also became well-versed in Neo-Confucianism after studying under Daesan Lee Sang-jeong at the age of 23.

Although he died at the age of 30, he left behind many works, including ‘Dohak Yukdo’, ‘Seogye Saerok’, ‘Saseo Uiui’, ‘Seongni Chanyo’, ‘Saseo Chanyo’, ‘Gye Mong Do Hae’, ‘Sim Gyeong Pum Mok’, and ‘Eul Su Je Yo’.

In particular, he demonstrated remarkable genius in the field of astronomy, such as making the Honcheonui [Seon Gi Ok Hyung] for observing the sky at the age of 16, and making and remaking it at the age of 21 and 27. The second half of ‘Seogyeswaerok’, compiled at the age of 28, is a full-fledged book on mathematics that covers everything from the theory of numbers to various types of calculation, and Bae Sang-yeol’s mathematical ideas are fully revealed.

Based on Choi Seok-jeong’s ‘Gusuryak’ from the previous period, it thoroughly escapes metaphysical colors in terms of specific calculation methods and operations, allowing us to confirm the reality of the changed mathematical ideas of Joseon intellectuals in the late 18th century.

This academic conference will be attended by five expert researchers in related fields, who will comprehensively review Bae Sang-yeol’s life and relationships, as well as Neo-Confucianism, divination, astronomy, and mathematical ideas.

First, Professor Park Kwon-soo (Chungbuk National University) will analyze Bae Sang-yeol’s life and relationships in detail and introduce his research on the cosmology of numerology.

Professor Lee Young-ho (Sungkyunkwan University) examines the Neo-Confucian thought that was the main axis of Bae Sang-yeol’s studies in the latter half of his life through ‘Dohak Yukdo’, which Bae completed just before his death. Director Eom Yeon-seok (Hallym University Taedong Classical Studies Institute) clarifies the characteristics and status of Bae Sang-yeol’s Dosanghak, which encompasses I Ching and Seongrihak, in the I Ching and Seongrihak of the late Joseon Dynasty.

Dr. Kim Sang-hyeok (Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute) briefly examines the history of the production of armillary spheres in Joseon, and reveals the unique characteristics of Bae Sang-yeol’s armillary sphere, which features 28 constellations drawn on the red circle. Finally, researcher Kang Min-jeong (Korean Classics Translation Institute) examines the characteristics of the mathematical thought of ‘Seogye Saerok’ by comparing it with Choi Seok-jeong’s ‘Gusuryak’ from the early 18th century.

The intellectuals of the Yeongnam School in the 18th century tended to focus on metaphysical Neo-Confucianism and refined rites rather than on worldly and practical studies. In this era, the studies that Bae Sang-yeol pursued were very significant not only in terms of the history of 18th century thought, but also in the deepening and expansion of Yeongnam School studies.
