이번 조치는 명절을 앞두고 자금 수요가 몰리는 협력사와 원료·자재 공급사, 공사 참여기업 등의 자금 운용을 지원하기 위한 것이다. 포스코는 오는 9월 26일부터 10월 2일까지 5일간 한시적으로 대금 지급 기준을 조정해, 기존 주 2회 지급하던 자재·원료·공사 대금을 매일 지급하고 협력 작업비 역시 매일 집행한다.
포스코는 이번 결정이 거래기업들의 자금 부담을 덜고, 명절 기간 지역 상권에도 활력을 불어넣을 것으로 기대하고 있다.
앞서 포스코는 지역 경제 활성화를 위해 다양한 상생 활동을 펼쳐왔다. 포스코PHP봉사단 주관으로 전통시장에서 ‘착한 선결제’ 행사를 열고, 포항제철소 임직원들이 지역 식당을 찾는 ‘이웃동네 점심먹으러 가는 날’ 캠페인을 꾸준히 이어오고 있다.
포스코 관계자는 “포스코는 매년 명절을 앞두고 거래기업의 자금 운용을 돕기 위해 대금을 조기 지급해 왔다”며 “이번 조기 지급이 철강 불황과 경기 침체 속에서 어려움을 겪는 협력사와 지역 상권에 실질적인 도움이 되길 바란다”고 말했다.
한편, 포스코는 지난 2004년부터 중소기업 납품 대금을 전액 현금으로 지급하고 있으며, 2017년부터는 중견기업까지 현금 결제를 확대해 2·3차 협력사까지 상생 혜택이 확산되도록 하고 있다.

POSCO has previously promoted initiatives to revitalize the local economy, including the "Good Prepayment" event at traditional markets hosted by the POSCO PHP Volunteer Group and the "Lunch Day in the Neighborhood," a campaign encouraging employees to use local restaurants. This early holiday payment is expected to contribute substantially to the stability of local businesses and business partners.
A POSCO official stated, "POSCO has been paying its business partners early every year ahead of the Lunar New Year and Chuseok holidays to ease their financial burden. We hope this measure will help our business partners struggling due to the steel slump and economic downturn."
Meanwhile, POSCO has been paying SMEs in cash since December 2004. Since November 2017, the company has expanded this practice to include mid-sized companies, extending the benefits to second- and third-tier suppliers.
