【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=포스코 포항제철소가 설비의 내구성과 현장 안전 강화를 위해 ‘혁신공장’ 활동에 박차를 가하고 있다.

혁신공장 프로그램은 매년 4~5개 공장을 선정해 내부 개선점을 발굴하고, 설비 안정성을 높이는 동시에 안전·환경·편의시설 전반을 개선하는 포스코의 대표 혁신활동이다. 올해는 포항제철소 2후판공장을 포함해 총 4곳이 혁신공장으로 지정됐다.

2후판공장은 72명의 인력으로 구성돼 가열·압연·가속 냉각 등 핵심 공정의 운전과 정비를 담당하고 있다. 이번 혁신활동과 함께 ‘클린플로어(Clean Floor) 모델 공장’으로도 선정돼 깨끗하고 쾌적한 작업 환경 조성을 목표로 구역별 개선 프로젝트를 추진하고 있다. 현재까지 총 121건 중 88건의 개선을 완료하는 성과를 거뒀다.

특히 지난 10월 1일에는 제철소장 주재 멘토링 시간이 마련돼 혁신공장 활동 결과를 공유하고, 제철소장이 직접 현장을 둘러보며 성과를 점검하고 직원들을 격려했다.

이번 활동은 직원 전원이 자발적으로 개선점을 찾아 해결하는 ‘참여형 혁신’이라는 점에서 의미가 크다. 2후판공장은 가열로 펌프실 환경을 대대적으로 정비해 청결도를 높였으며, 이 사례는 타 공장의 벤치마킹 모델로 확산되고 있다. 또한 공장 내부의 사각지대를 점검하고 결함을 제거하는 등 현장 안전 강화 활동도 병행 중이다.

장명훈 2후판공장장은 “혁신공장 활동을 통해 팀원들과 함께 더 나은 일터를 만들어가고 있다”며 “작은 변화부터 꾸준히 실천해 모두가 안심하고 일할 수 있는 공장을 만드는 데 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.

한편 포항제철소는 QSS(Quick Six Sigma) 활동을 기반으로 사내 개선리더 육성과 지역 중소기업 혁신리더 교육을 이어가며, 생산성 향상과 지역 상생, 경기 활성화에도 꾸준히 힘쓰고 있다.

POSCO Pohang Works is accelerating its "Innovation Factory" initiative to enhance equipment durability and on-site safety.

The Innovation Factory program is POSCO's flagship innovation initiative. Each year, four to five plants are selected to identify areas for internal improvement, enhance equipment stability, and improve overall safety, environment, and amenities. This year, a total of four sites, including Pohang Works' No. 2 Plate Mill, were designated as Innovation Factories.

The No. 2 Plate Mill, staffed by 72 people, is responsible for the operation and maintenance of core processes such as heating, rolling, and accelerated cooling. Along with this innovation initiative, the plant was also designated a "Clean Floor Model Factory," implementing area-specific improvement projects aimed at creating a clean and pleasant work environment. To date, 88 of the 121 improvements have been completed.

Notably, on October 1st, a mentoring session led by the steel plant manager was held, where the results of the Innovation Factory activities were shared. The steel plant manager personally toured the site, inspecting progress and encouraging employees.

This activity was significant in that it embodied "participatory innovation," where all employees voluntarily identified and addressed areas for improvement. The No. 2 Plate Plant significantly improved the cleanliness of the furnace pump room, a practice that has become a benchmarking model for other plants. Furthermore, on-site safety enhancement activities are underway, including inspecting blind spots and eliminating defects within the plant.

Jang Myeong-hoon, Manager of the No. 2 Plate Plant, stated, "Through the Innovation Factory activities, we are creating a better workplace together with our team members. We will continue to implement small changes and do our best to create a plant where everyone can work with peace of mind."

Meanwhile, Pohang Steel Works continues to foster internal improvement leaders and provide training for innovation leaders at local SMEs, leveraging Quick Six Sigma (QSS) initiatives. This commitment contributes to increased productivity, regional coexistence, and economic revitalization.
