【브레이크뉴스 포항】이성현 기자=경상북도가 미래 산업 핵심 소재로 주목받는 그래핀 생산 공장 준공으로 차세대 소재산업 허브로 도약할 기반을 마련했다.
18일 포항 블루밸리국가산단에서 열린 그래핀스퀘어㈜ 포항공장 준공식에는 김성열 산업통상부 산업기반실장, 이남억 경북 공항투자본부장, 이강덕 포항시장, 김일만 포항시의회 의장, 이영수 삼성전자 생산기술연구소장 등 100여 명이 참석했다. 준공식은 기념사, 축사, 테이프 커팅, 공장 투어 순으로 진행됐다.
그래핀스퀘어㈜는 2012년 설립된 그래핀 전문기업으로, 2021년 경북도와 포항시와 MOU를 체결하고 본사를 수도권에서 포항으로 이전했다. 이번 공장 준공으로 총 420억 원을 투자해 연면적 6,308㎡(지상 2층) 규모의 공장을 완공하고, 연간 30만㎡의 그래핀 필름 양산체계를 구축했다.
포항공장은 1층에 1,800㎡ 규모 클린룸과 모듈 제조 설비, 2층에 연구실과 직원 복지시설을 갖춰 연구개발과 생산이 결합된 첨단소재 제조 인프라를 완성했다. 그래핀은 철보다 200배 강하고, 실리콘보다 전자 이동도가 100배 빠른 소재로 반도체·디스플레이·이차전지·전기차 등 미래 산업 전반에 핵심 소재로 활용된다.
홍병희 그래핀스퀘어 대표는 “이번 준공으로 그래핀이 더 이상 연구실에 머무는 ‘꿈의 신소재’가 아닌 산업 발전의 새로운 시대를 여는 기념비적 출발점이 될 것”이라고 밝혔다. 이강덕 포항시장은 “공장 준공은 그래핀 산업의 새로운 전환점이자 포항이 세계 그래핀 산업 중심 도시로 도약하는 기폭제가 될 것”이라고 강조했다.
이남억 경북 공항투자본부장은 “그래핀스퀘어 포항공장 준공은 경북 첨단소재 산업 육성 전략의 결실”이라며, “앞으로도 투자보조금, 인허가, 인력양성 등 전방위적 지원을 아끼지 않겠다”고 말했다.
경북도와 포항시는 향후 그래핀·이차전지·반도체 등 미래 소재산업 클러스터 조성을 지속 추진하며, 지역 첨단산업 생태계 강화에 나설 계획이다.

Graphene Square Co., Ltd., a graphene specialist founded in 2012, signed an MOU with Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Pohang City in 2021 and relocated its headquarters from the Seoul metropolitan area to Pohang. With the completion of this plant, a total investment of 42 billion won has been completed, resulting in a 6,308㎡ (two-story) facility with an annual production capacity of 300,000㎡ of graphene film.
The Pohang plant features a 1,800㎡ cleanroom and module manufacturing facilities on the first floor, and a research lab and employee welfare facilities on the second floor, completing an advanced materials manufacturing infrastructure that integrates R&D and production. Graphene is 200 times stronger than steel and boasts electron mobility 100 times faster than silicon, making it a key material for a wide range of future industries, including semiconductors, displays, secondary batteries, and electric vehicles.
Hong Byung-hee, CEO of Graphene Square, stated, "With this completion, graphene will no longer be a 'dream new material' relegated to the laboratory, but will mark a monumental starting point for a new era of industrial development." Pohang Mayor Lee Kang-deok emphasized, "The completion of the plant marks a new turning point for the graphene industry and will serve as a catalyst for Pohang's rise as a global graphene industry hub."
Lee Nam-eok, Director of Gyeongbuk Airport Investment Headquarters, stated, "The completion of the Graphene Square Pohang plant is the fruition of Gyeongbuk's strategy to foster the advanced materials industry. We will continue to provide comprehensive support, including investment subsidies, permits, and human resource development."
Gyeongbuk Province and Pohang City plan to continue to foster a cluster of future materials industries, including graphene, secondary batteries, and semiconductors, and strengthen the local advanced industry ecosystem.
