선남면은 현재 749농가가 총 735ha 면적에서 참외를 재배하고 있는 성주 참외 주산지로, 체계적인 재배기술 향상과 농업경영인 육성을 통해 연중 고품질 참외 생산 기반을 구축하고 있다.
이날 출하 농가를 방문한 조익현 선남면장은 “오늘 출하된 참외가 선남면 참외 농가 소득 증대로 이어지는 의미 있는 출발점이 되기를 바란다”며 “앞으로도 참외 재배 농가에 대한 적극적인 행정 지원을 통해 성주군 참외 조수입 7천억 원 조기 달성을 위해 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.
한편 성주 참외는 전국적인 명성을 바탕으로 겨울철 고소득 작목으로 자리매김하고 있으며, 선남면은 품질 경쟁력 강화를 통해 명품 참외 브랜드 가치를 지속적으로 높여 나갈 계획이다.
