이철우 후보는 1978년 수학교사로 발령받은 상주 화령중을 거쳐 지금은 폐교된 의성 신평중, 단밀중에서 교편을 잡은 바 있다.

스승의 날인 15일 의성 신평중 6기 제자들이 카네이션과 꽃다발을 들고 찾아왔다. 이철우 후보가 40여년 전 수학을 가르쳤던 제자들이다. 15명의  제자들은 ‘선생님 늘 감사하고 존경합니다 ! 그리고 선생님 제자라서 참 좋습니다’라고 씌여진 현수막을 준비해 보는 이들을 흐뭇하게 했다.

지난 13일에는 도민캠프 개소day에 이철우 후보의 제자인 임이자 국회의원과 의성신평중학교 7회 졸업생들이 방문해 맞절을 하며 사제지간의 예를 나누기도 했다.  

 이철우 후보는“경북도지사 후보로서 매일 바쁜 일정으로 도민들과 소통하고 있는데, 제자들이 찾아오니 더욱 힘이 난다”며“지역 사회의 리더로서 역할을 하는 제자들을 만날 때마다 교사 출신 후보로서 더욱 깨끗하고, 정정당당하게 선거운동을 해야겠다는 다짐을 하게 된다”고 감회에 젖었다. 

 이 후보는“서로의 고마움을 오랫동안 잊지 않겠다는‘장무상망(長毋相忘)’의 정신을 되새기며, 우리 사회와 전국 학교마다 장무상망의 향기가 널리 퍼지길 기대한다”고 말했다.
